Elegant modern restaurant interior with minimalist design, soft lighting, neutral tones and exquisite furniture for a contemporary lunch experience.

The renovation of Lerouy by Studio Hot Design Folks reinterprets one of Singapore's most renowned restaurants, awarded a Michelin star. Under the direction of designers Eugenia Lazareva and Farhana Sudiro, the new 220 sqm space emphasizes the unique blanc carte of French cuisine by Chef Christophe Leroua, combining minimalist industrial style, theatrical staging and notes of understated luxury. Designed as both a stage and dining room, the renovation aims to create an experience worthy of a second Michelin star.

Project Overview

Lerouy moved to a new location in a shop-house style, defined by the typical Singaporean long narrow floor plan without windows. This created both a design challenge and an opportunity: to create an interior that feels spacious, immersive, and atmospheric despite spatial constraints.

The design strategy aimed to:

  • Highlight the open kitchen as the restaurant's stage.

  • Create an atmosphere that is neutral, warm, and minimalist, with industrial notes.

  • Use mirrors, bronze finishes and reflective surfaces to extend the visual perception of space.

  • Enhance guest experience through individual details, multi-level lighting and luxurious textures.

Concept and Atmosphere: Culinary Theater

The restaurant is a theatrical journey:

  • Entrance hall and bar: Guests enter through a compact 1.5-meter hallway leading to a cozy arched bar for 4–5 people. Its curved ceiling recalls the wine cellars of the chef's childhood in France.

  • Main dining room: Tables face the open kitchen like spectators before a stage. Guests watch the 'culinary performance' unfold in real time as Chef Leroua and his team prepare dishes.

  • Design as backdrop: Interiors are crafted as a stage for the performance, consistently and harmoniously, with no single element dominating.

Contrasting accents—velvet drapes, marble furniture and dramatic lighting—enhance the subtle minimalist palette.

Materials and Finishes

The renovation highlights the refined choice of materials to achieve elegance within modesty:

  • Walls made from pearl beige plaster add warmth and depth.

  • Bronze checkered panels behind the kitchen add geometry and sophistication.

  • Terrazzo ceiling plaster improves acoustics and visual continuity.

  • Large-format calm stone tiles for the floor base with balanced tones.

  • Natural marble and leather furniture provide individual luxury.

  • Velvet drapes soften acoustics and add theatricality.

Throughout the space, the contrast between matte and reflective finishes creates dynamics that balance minimalism and brightness.

Lighting and Reflections

Light plays a central role in shaping the dining experience:

  • Accent lighting highlights the culinary stage while ensuring a comfortable ambiance for guests.

  • Mirror bronze elements visually expand the narrow shop-house layout.

  • Hidden ambient lighting synchronizes the rhythm of dining with the beat of electronic music loved by the chef.

Secondary Spaces

At the far end of the restaurant are the wine cellar, restrooms and kitchen, each designed with continuity in mind. Warm beige tones, textured walls, and bronze metal details echo the main room.

Elements such as bronze door handles, metal lamps and pearl finishes in the bathroom reinforce the consistent design language, ensuring every corner contributes to a unified atmosphere.

Experience and Narrative

The renovated Lerouy is minimalist yet dramatic. It's minimalist in its modesty and lack of distractions, focusing on the centrality of food and performance. Yet it's dramatic in how a meal dances as an immersive theatrical act, where textures, lighting and space combine to elevate the artistry of French cuisine.

As interior designer Eugenia Lazareva explains: “The interior design is crafted as a backdrop for the kitchen. All elements harmonize with each other, creating a balanced composition, much like Chef Christophe Leroua's dishes.”

The renovation of Lerouy by Studio Hot Design Folks is an elegant reinterpretation of a Singaporean star restaurant. Combining industrial minimalism, theatrical staging and understated luxury, the design enhances both culinary and spatial experience. More than a restaurant, Lerouy is now a culinary theater, where every detail—from bronze accents to velvet drapes—amplifies the chef's craft and guests' immersion.
