QAZAQBOOKS by Kvadrat Architects: A Cultural Landmark in Astana Spanning 355 Square Feet
Multi-functional Space Redefining Bookstore Design
Located in the heart of Astana, QAZAQBOOKS is more than just a bookstore. It's a literary and cultural center designed by Kvadrat Architects. At only 355 square feet, this compact space houses a bookstore, cafe, mini-bar, and flexible area for author meet-and-greets and intimate cultural events.
Its unique spatial efficiency and conceptual clarity earned it a spot on the shortlist of ADD AWARDS 2022, a testament to how thoughtful architecture can transform even the smallest areas into captivating experiences.
More Than a Bookstore: A Cultural Mission
The QAZAQBOOKS team isn't just book sellers—they are publishers, translators, and cultural curators. They transport global literature into the Kazakh language and host events such as book signings, readings, and themed evenings for both local and international authors.
To support this mission, architects at Kvadrat created a mobile and flexible layout:
-
Modular shelves can be rearranged or completely moved to free up space for events.
-
Bar and reading zones are integrated without visual clutter.
-
Each zone supports both solitary reading and collective interaction.
“Every inch of QAZAQBOOKS is designed to feel slow, mindful, and inspiring,” say the architects. “It's a place where literature comes alive.”
Interior Concept: Minimalism with a Signature Color
Despite its compact size, the space feels vast, bright, and immersive. The design uses a muted color palette with an emphasis on QAZAQBOOKS’ signature yellow tone, which enlivens the space and strengthens its visual identity.
-
Stainless steel sheets softly reflect yellow tones, creating a gradient lighting effect.
-
Bookshelves and ceiling elements are adorned with vibrant solar accents that guide the eye throughout the space.
-
The palette balances a dynamic brand identity with a cozy atmosphere for readers.
Tactile, Flexible, and User-Centric
Kvadrat Architects' design emphasizes material texture, modularity, and ambiance:
-
Island shelves and bar furniture can be easily reconfigured, allowing the program to evolve dynamically.
-
Atmosphere encourages readers to linger, open books, sip lattes, and engage in conversations.
-
Despite a packed schedule, the space never feels overcrowded—thanks to precise planning and minimalist details.
