URBANJOBS, a recognized design studio with headquarters in Istanbul, has unveiled Scalla, a luxurious Mediterranean restaurant for 120 guests located in the coastal district of Beikoes. The design is based on the philosophy of spatial fluidity, material honesty and sensory interaction, making Scalla more than just a dining venue — it's an architectural journey.

The restaurant name, inspired by the Italian word scala (ladder), reflects a multi-layered philosophy that shifts perspectives. At the heart of this design is the Glass Curtain, an innovative curved architectural system that breaks traditional boundaries and creates a seamless dialogue between form, function and material.

Glass Curtain: Redefining Restaurant Architecture

Instead of using rigid columns, URBANJOBS developed the Glass Curtain as a three-dimensional curved structure inspired by the undulating coastline of the Mediterranean Sea. This aluminum system with copper coating curves inward and outward, defining flexible zones and blurring the boundaries between enclosed and open spaces.

The result is a breathtaking, smooth shell reflecting the natural textures of Beikoes while providing a technically and aesthetically innovative solution. The Glass Curtain is not only an architectural boundary but also defines the restaurant's identity — a language of movement, rhythm and discovery.

Social Core: Central Bar

At the heart of Scalla’s spatial narrative stands a centrally located bar, created as both functional and symbolic anchor. Visible from several vantage points, the bar offers orientation and acts as a social magnet. Its design — featuring marble-style relief finishes, copper accents and individual lighting — enhances the restaurant's overall ambiance.

Founder and lead designer Murat Dede describes the guest journey as a deliberate sequence of framed impressions:

  • Passing by the bar and kitchen window upon entry

  • Ascending to upper levels for a change in perspective

  • Returning to the bar and wine cabinet on the return trip

This movement strategy transforms travel into memory, ensuring that each element is etched in guests' recollections.

Atmospheric Layers: Ceiling and Lighting

The ceiling in Scalla is considered a unifying architectural surface, alternating between raised sections interwoven with leather inserts and lowered beams that create intimacy. Lighting plays a key role: from natural light penetrating through the Glass Curtain during the day to dramatic theatrical atmosphere at night.

Custom-made wall sconces, floor lamps and recessed LED lights accentuate the smooth geometry, creating a rich sensory environment that evolves over time.

Material Palette: Warmth, Tactility and Sustainability

URBANJOBS selected an elegant palette of wood, leather, marble and copper to create a warm yet modern Mediterranean atmosphere. Each piece of furniture was specially designed for Scalla, from engraved copper plaques to Ralph Lauren and Dedar textiles.

Features:

  • Copper elements from Turnstyle Designs

  • Geometric tile flooring for rhythm and continuity

  • Wallpaper from ARTE and Phillip Jeffries

  • Comfortable furniture for tactile richness

The color palette is inspired by Mediterranean landscapes, combining earthy beige tones, sandy hues and copper accents with refreshing blue shades. Local materials enhance sustainability and a sense of place.

Outdoor Space: Curves of Nature

The restaurant’s outdoor terrace continues the architectural concept with a pergola reflecting the curved forms of the Glass Curtain. The landscaping by famous plant designer Yunus Karmi enhances the setting with sculptural greenery, integrated lighting and acoustic solutions — creating a microclimate for relaxed outdoor dining.

Sensory Experience

Scalla is more than a restaurant; it's an immersive architectural story. From the powerful movements of the Glass Curtain to individual design details, every element contributes to intimacy, discovery and connection. Guests are invited to move slowly, explore and engage, making each visit unique.

By breaking rigid boundaries and embracing fluidity, URBANJOBS has created one of the most interesting hospitality spaces in Istanbul — a space where architecture, gastronomy and human experience intertwine.
