Useful life hacks for those who care about their health

Experts constantly debate the benefits of masks, but one thing we know for sure: they are not available in stores or pharmacies. Homemade masks can help solve this problem — you can make them at home. We explain the details and also recall how to wear and dispose of them properly.

When should you wear a mask?

  • If you are sick, sneezing or coughing.
  • If you come into contact with infected individuals and provide them with medical care.
  • And if you don’t forget to disinfect your hands with antiseptic (we explained how to make it at home here).

WHO's opinion: healthy people do not need to wear masks.

Opinion of the Russian Ministry of Health: masks may slow down the spread of the virus. However, they are only effective in closed rooms and crowded places.

Can't find masks in stores. How to make them yourself?

WHO specialists warn: homemade masks are less effective than medical ones (but still better than having no mask at all).

Make a disposable mask from fabric

Take dense cotton fabric (on video — a 45×45 cm scarf) and two elastic bands, each 18 cm long. Fold the scarf in half and fold it like a concertina. The edges need to be folded over and either stitched by hand or sewn on a machine. Then you just have to thread the elastic bands and tie them with knots.

Or a reusable mask with a replaceable filter

A more complex instruction that allows you to make a reusable mask with a removable filter. After each use, such a mask should be washed with soap or detergent, then steamed with a steam generator and ironed while hot.

Or just fold it from fabric

This is probably the fastest option in a pinch — if you suddenly need a mask right now and don’t have needles or thread at hand. For example, if you need to quickly go to a store or pharmacy. And of course, after use, the fabric should be washed.

Use old clothes

Once again, a simple solution for quick trips to the store. All you need is an old unnecessary t-shirt and scissors.

Important

Whatever mask you choose, it should:

  • fit snugly over the nose but allow free breathing;
  • have multiple layers of fabric;
  • and have ear loops (elastic bands);
  • maintain its shape (if the mask has deformed, it is no longer suitable for use).

How to properly put on, wear, and remove a mask?

  • Before putting on the mask, disinfect your hands with antiseptic.
  • Ensure that it fits snugly over the nose and there are no gaps between your face and the fabric.
  • Do not touch the mask while wearing it. If you accidentally touch the front side of the mask, wash your hands with soap or disinfect with an alcohol solution.
  • Replace disposable masks every two hours and each time the fabric becomes wet.
  • Remove it carefully by pulling on the ear loops, trying not to touch the fabric. Then thoroughly wash your hands.
  • Place all masks in a sealed bag and dispose of it in the trash bin.
