Gypsum ceilings with lighting can be decorated in any way, depending on your financial capabilities and the technical characteristics of the room. You can combine a chandelier with carved lamps, or completely forget about the first and create an entire lighting system in the room that will regulate the level of illumination from intimate semi-darkness to bright light. Moreover, energy-saving bulbs are used everywhere today, and with them it is impossible to create a system for smooth regulation of lighting levels.

In addition, hidden lighting can also help create an unforgettable ceiling design – for example, a "floating ceiling". This effect is achieved, for instance, with LED strips in the construction of a two-level ceiling. You can choose either a single-color strip or a multi-colored one. The brightness is regulated using a dimmer, and the colored strip is controlled with an RGB controller. More details about gypsum ceiling design.

In this article, we will learn how to install lighting during the installation of a gypsum board ceiling with your own hands.

Recently, we have already discussed how to mount the framework of a suspended gypsum board ceiling and how to attach Knauf Gypsum Board sheets to it. Now we will look at how to incorporate lighting into it.

How to Install Lighting in a Suspended Ceiling

So, what options do we have for lighting in a gypsum board ceiling? We can install a common lamp, point lighting, LED lighting, or a combined option.

You can also read about combining wallpapers and dividing zones.

With a regular bulb, everything is clear. The main thing is not to forget to run the cable to the installation spot above the gypsum board.

Now let's talk about recessed lights. What is important with them? There must be enough space between the ceiling and the gypsum board for the "underwater," i.e., invisible part of the light fixture. Therefore, do not forget to buy the lights before starting to mount the ceiling. Or buy them by trying on with already existing dimensions. Otherwise, you will end up in a dilemma.

Also, mark where the lights will be located and run the electrical wiring ahead of time to secure the cable above the future lights. Do not forget to measure the spots for lights carefully. Otherwise, cutting out holes for them, you risk hitting the profile or ending up half a meter away from the secured cable.

Do not worry about cutting out a perfect circle, as the decorative rim of the light fixture will hide any defects. Secure the electrical wires in the terminals, then insert the light fixture into the prepared socket. The job is done, let's move to the next one...

Photo 2 — Ceiling Lighting Design Option

For lovers of the unusual and owners of high ceilings, LED lighting will be interesting. It can be in the form of an LED strip or separate embedded lights. It looks very beautiful, and functionally it does not lag behind. This type of lighting provides soft and comfortable light.

Usually, LED strips are installed in niches or borders along the perimeter of the room, or around the first level in multi-level structures. However, you will have to give up curved forms and return to strict geometric shapes. In terms of color palette, LED lighting can be monochrome or multi-colored. The range is from warm to saturated tones. In general, for every taste and style. As we wrote above, it is controlled with an RGB controller or light dimmer.

Undeniable advantage of LED lighting is its low energy consumption and high safety (during operation, the lights do not heat up, which excludes fire hazards).

However, the catch is that LED lighting cannot be left as a standalone light source (unless you are satisfied with intimate semi-darkness in the room, for example, to make such lighting in a bedroom by adding wall sconces), as it provides very little light. Therefore, this type of lighting is usually used for decorative purposes to emphasize interior elements or create the effect of a "floating ceiling." It is also suitable for night lighting.

The right option is combined lighting. By combining different types of lighting, you can illuminate the entire required area and define zones. For example, you can install a chandelier in the center of the ceiling, around the perimeter, place recessed lights. And along the room's perimeter in the borders, lay an LED strip. Depending on your needs, you can use all three types of light sources simultaneously or each separately.

Recommendations for Ceiling Lighting

A few tips

  • If you use low-voltage lights, do not forget to provide space for a step-down transformer. Today, they can easily be hidden under gypsum board due to their small compact size.
  • Do not use incandescent bulbs. They consume too much electricity and heat up significantly, increasing the risk of fire.
  • Use energy-saving bulbs and LED lights; they are economical and safe.
  • When installing electrical wiring, remember that it is not allowed to use cables with wires made of different metals, and the wires can only be connected in an accessible place.
  • Run cables through corrugated tubes or use double-insulated cables.
  • When mounting a metal ceiling framework, be careful not to damage the electrical wiring with screws.
  • For complex lighting systems, for safety, it is better to provide a separate circuit breaker in the electrical panel.

Features of Ceiling Lighting in Various Rooms

Let's move on to the features of ceiling lighting in various rooms. Below you will not only find recommendations but also see photos of already completed options.

So, lighting in a living room. The living room is a space for imagination. Here you can boldly combine all types of lighting. LED lights are great for watching movies, creating a cinema effect. In the living room, both chandeliers and recessed lights are suitable. The latter can help define zones in the room.

In a child's room, you can create the effect of a starry sky or embed lights into various gypsum board structures (from running clouds to unicorns or spaceships). The main thing is not to forget that in a child's room, the working (play) zone must be well lit. By the way, LED lighting can also be used as a night light, especially if the child is afraid to fall asleep in complete darkness.

In the entrance hall, recessed lights with an accent on the area where a mirror or wardrobe is placed will be convenient. For a large hall, if desired, you can use all types of lighting at once – for decoration and functionality.

In a bathroom, you can make both central and recessed lighting. It all depends on your imagination and the room's dimensions. The main thing is if you like to splash around, do not forget to make the bulb waterproof.

In a Khrushchev-style apartment, there are fewer options. Low ceilings in some cases may completely prevent installing recessed or LED lighting. Multi-level structures are also not suitable in such cases. It is better to make central lighting, supplemented with recessed lights (if there is enough space between the ceiling and gypsum board for them).

In a private house, there is usually plenty of space for experiments. Here, choose the combination of lights based on the style of the rooms and your financial capabilities.

On a balcony, it is more convenient to install recessed lights – they do not take up much space and provide sufficient light.

On a mansard, much will depend on the roof pitch. It may not be possible to install a chandelier, so only recessed and LED lighting, plus wall sconces and floor lamps will remain. However, more often, there are opportunities for combined lighting.

Single-Level and Two-Level Gypsum Ceilings

A single-level gypsum ceiling is usually chosen by lovers of strictness and simplicity or owners of apartments with low ceilings. In the latter, you can't really go wild, otherwise the room will look like a gnome's dwelling. In spacious apartments, you can make two-level gypsum ceilings, and if desired, even three-level ones. The main thing is not to overdo it.

And do not forget that multi-level ceilings are not suitable for every interior style. The ceiling must also harmonize with the rest of the room.

Multi-level ceilings give much greater opportunities for decoration. They can be adorned not only with the color of finishing but also with a combination of various lights or geometric forms. However, it should be remembered that improper placement and excessive cluttering of the structures can simply overload the space. So, do not try to make the ceiling as elaborate as possible if you don't have high ceilings or a grand style in your interior.

Two-level ceilings, in principle, are the optimal solution if you do not want excessive bulkiness.

They can be combined with stretched inserts, creating the effect of a "floating ceiling," starry sky...

The main thing is not to forget to draw up a plan before starting the work, what the structures will be like and how the lights will be installed, enter all necessary measurements to avoid having to redo everything later.

Gypsum Ceiling with Lighting (Video)

We have reviewed the theory of how to make a gypsum ceiling with lighting. The video will show how all this can look in real life.

$ Cost of Lighting

The cost of organizing lighting for such ceilings is not very high. In previous materials, we have already looked at how much the ceiling structure itself will cost. Now let's move on to lighting.

As for recessed lights, their price in Kyiv starts from 15 UAH per unit (though in such cases, the quality of the lights will not be impressive), and in Moscow – from 30 rubles (also the most budget option). Higher-quality lights will start from 50-60 UAH in Kyiv and from 150 rubles in Moscow.

LED lights will cost from 130 UAH in Kyiv, LED strips from 3 UAH (price per module of 50 mm), in Moscow – from 600-700 rubles per light, from 170 rubles per strip.
