Advice from a Professional

Making a stylish renovation is one thing, but learning how to maintain order in your home is quite another. Even a couple of shirts hung on chairs can ruin the interior and draw attention solely to the clutter in your apartment.

Designer Diana Balashova shared her advice on how to store household items with us.

Closets on All Walls

The more closets there are in the house, the less desire there will be to clutter the surrounding space. Wardrobes, storage rooms, lofts — all of this should be planned at least to prevent items from being scattered around. That is why it's best to place a closet against each wall.

Decluttering

Disorder will spoil the impression even of the most expensive renovation. To keep your home in "top form," it's necessary to periodically inventory and get rid of unnecessary items.

The designer, in turn, should design the wardrobe and other storage areas. It's not worth being stingy here, otherwise there's a risk of drowning in piles of clutter.

It's important to clearly define what household accessories can be useful right now and which ones won't be needed in the next six months or never at all. The first should be organized, and the second should be thrown away or given away.

Space Organization

To use storage spaces properly, there should be 20% fewer items than the space can accommodate. That is why it's better to classify everything by categories based on who owns what.

For example, one family member's outerwear is stored in a closet in the hallway, evening wear in a room, and transitional clothing on lofts. Some even sort items by size and color. The most important thing is not just to sort but also to hang them on hangers.

All Items in Their Place

It's necessary to follow a simple rule: shoes must be stored in separate wardrobes so they don't get lost among everything else.

Bedding and undergarments are better stored in drawers of a dresser. Sports bras, lace panties, and house socks should also be placed in different sections. Spare blankets and pillows should be kept inside the bed with a lifting mechanism.

As for the kitchen, there should also be a storage system. For example, food supplies in one cabinet and kitchen utensils in another.

Appliances and cleaning chemicals can be kept in the storage room, and empty suitcases on lofts.

Organizing Items

Accumulation of shampoos and shower gels on a shelf in the bathroom will sooner or later lead to chaos, so it's better to provide for sliding drawers and small cabinets for them. Otherwise, there won't be any room left for the next tube of toothpaste due to half-empty tubes of scrubs.
