What is a cassette ceiling?

The most universal type of suspended ceiling – cassette. If you've decided to install such a ceiling at home or in the office, congratulations: cassette ceilings offer excellent performance characteristics and an attractive appearance. They suit any room purpose, size, style, and are often used in turnkey renovations.

Structurally, cassette ceilings resemble rod systems – they consist of a suspension system and ceiling elements called cassettes. Unlike long strips, cassettes have a square shape. They are made from aluminum or galvanized steel.

Aluminum for cassette ceilings is polished chemically, giving them a mirror-like shine. The main feature of these ceilings is that panels in most cassette ceiling systems are not fastened or attached to the frame – they simply rest in the grid. Their weight alone holds them in place, making removal very convenient.

IMPORTANT! Cassettes are not only decorative panels. They can also be replaced with so-called grid lighting fixtures (a set of two or four fluorescent lamps). LED panels, heaters (including infrared emitters), and ventilation grilles may also be installed in the same spaces.

Panel Materials for Cassette Ceilings

If you've decided to install a cassette ceiling at home, you should know that installation is only justified if you have sufficient ceiling height. In a 'Khrushchyovka' with low ceilings, you should definitely explore alternative solutions.

Cassette ceilings for bathrooms, showers, and other wet areas can be used, but with material limitations: an aluminum cassette ceiling is ideal for your needs, but one made from gypsum panels is not.

Reflective panels on a glass base are not only beautiful: they perfectly complement the metallic sheen of the frame structure and allow creating futuristic-style ceilings with modern LED lighting. Mirror-like cassette ceilings add a distinctive touch to interiors and are ideal for small rooms – they visually expand space and make rooms brighter.

Aluminum or galvanized steel panels are typically used in metal cassette ceilings. These types – aluminum and galvanized – are often used in high-moisture or flood-prone areas.

French cassette ceilings have unique features that set them apart from other suspended systems. Panels are made from food-grade aluminum with a bimetallic coating – an eco-friendly, fire-resistant material. Such a cassette ceiling does not fade and is ideal for high-humidity and fire-risk areas.

Wooden panels are a rather exotic choice. Typically made from premium hardwoods like oak, ash, or teak. Panels may feature intricate relief carvings; in such cases, the profile is hidden or enhanced with wooden inserts.

Perforated cassette ceilings are a modern and high-quality form of ceiling finishing. Their wear resistance allows use in almost any environment. Design variety ensures you won’t be limited by panel types, colors, or shapes. Installation is extremely simple – panels are secured to an 'armstrong' type frame, allowing DIY savings.

Importance of Choosing

If you've already decided on the material for your new suspended ceiling, it's time to choose a manufacturer offering the best cassette ceiling options for your apartment.

Cesal

Cassette ceiling Cesal is wear-resistant, easy to clean, and can be disinfected with strong cleaning agents. Additionally, Cesal cassette ceilings are available in a wide color range and made from high-quality aluminum, which resists corrosion, ensuring a long service life.

 Price: from $2 /unit.

SKY

SKY cassette ceilings are installed very quickly and can be dismantled just as fast if needed. Therefore, if you need to replace a single element or remove the entire structure, it won’t take much time.

Panels used in SKY cassette ceilings are made from aluminum, which ensures they will last for decades.

They are not prone to rust, do not warp over time, and retain their original color for many years. SKY cassette ceilings require minimal maintenance – a dry cloth is sufficient, but damp cleaning is also allowed.

 Price: from $8 per 100 sq.m.

Албес

Albès cassette ceilings combine simple design with functionality. Their structural features allow seamless integration even in rooms with irregular shapes, recesses, or protrusions. A wide color range significantly extends their application and usage.

Different perforation types and special acoustic insulation increase sound absorption and create a favorable acoustic environment. Albès cassette ceilings are made from aluminum and galvanized steel, greatly expanding their use, especially in high-moisture and fire safety critical areas.

 Price: from $9 per 100 sq.m.

Geipel

The metal used in Geipel cassettes has very high resistance to corrosion and aggressive environments. Paint is applied evenly, without 'build-ups', creating a visually smooth surface even under angled lighting: such a surface reflects all objects without loss or distortion, like a real mirror.

Geipel metal cassettes have a perfectly flat surface: when placed on a horizontal surface, they lie tightly not only along the edges but across the entire panel.

 Price: from $0.25 per sq.m.

Budget

The price of a cassette ceiling depends on the material used. Cassettes are made from metal sheets, with prices varying based on color and coating technology. To accurately calculate the full kit and price, you need to know the room’s area and perimeter to avoid purchase errors.

As experience shows, it’s better to buy a few extra cassettes as a backup than to be short, ending up with an ugly hole in the ceiling.

Installing a Cassette Ceiling Yourself

How are metal cassette ceilings installed? Clearly, each ceiling system has its own specifics. For example, we’ll use a 60x60 cm aluminum cassette ceiling with a standard open frame and the same spacing for the crossbars.

Step 1: Mark the wall line for the wall angle. Fix it every 40–60 cm; ideally, the end fastenings should not be far from the room corners.

Step 2: Stretch strings along the axis of the guide rails, using them as a reference to fix the hangers. Distance between hangers: 120 cm; maximum distance from the outer hanger to the wall: 60 cm.

Step 3: Using the same strings as a guide, attach the rails to the hangers and wall angle.

Step 4: First install 120 cm rails, then 60 cm ones. Naturally, you’ll need to cut them at the walls.

Step 5: Install the panels. You’ll need to cut them at the walls. Your choice of method; just remember that aluminum cassette panels are only 0.5 mm thick and easily bend or deform. You can use a grinder, metal shears (or regular scissors), or even a sharp knife. Trace the cut line several times, then carefully break the tile – it will be almost fully cut through.
