Building a Log Cabin — By Yourself. Cost of Construction
After determining the material for the log cabin, you can proceed to the next stages of its construction.
Stages of Log Cabin Construction
After determining the material for the log cabin, you can proceed to the next stages of its construction. Before starting, consider these key points:
Project
Without a project, construction is impossible. Initially, you need to sketch the future log cabin, plan the layout, calculate material quantities, and plan for utilities. Therefore, always begin with a detailed project.

Location
If the land for the cabin is already available, this issue is resolved. If you plan to purchase land for construction, consider:
- climate conditions;
- soil type;
- feasibility of utility connections*.
*If there is no water supply, drinking water can be provided by building a well.

The project is complete, construction permit obtained, materials purchased — you can now begin building the structure.
Construction Stages
How can log cabin construction be divided into stages to optimize labor? We present a standard sequence followed by professionals.
Foundation
The foundation is the base of the log cabin. The type of foundation is determined during the design phase, based on soil type, groundwater level, the weight of the future structure, and the need for a basement.
For example, a monolithic strip foundation is recommended for cabins on weak soils, especially for sizes 4x4 meters or larger. This type allows for a basement, cellar, or garage.

Pile foundations are suitable for small cabins.
Strip foundations cost approximately 50% more than column foundations.
Often, foundation blocks are used. Their simple installation saves time. On a prepared foundation, lay the following layers:
- waterproofing: roofing felt, or similar – 2–3 layers;
- inter-rung insulation;
- support boards 20–30 cm wide, 6–8 cm thick;
- inter-rung insulation;
- first log course.
Logs (Rungs)
The first (foundation) course should use logs or beams with a larger diameter. For example, if the cabin log has a diameter of 20 cm, use logs of 24–26 cm for the base course. The material used for the first layer must be treated with a wood preservative.

IMPORTANT! Experts recommend using larch for the first course. This wood species is the most moisture-resistant.
Typically, rungs consist of 4 sides, each made from one log or beam.
Subsequent rungs are laid "in a cradle". Corner joints can vary:
- into a mortise;
- into a tenon, etc.
Rows are joined by interlocking notches. Notches are cut into the lower side of the logs. The best notch shape is a semicircle.
Notch width depends on log diameter. For example, if the log diameter is 22–24 cm, the notch width should be 15 cm.
Logs are secured using dowels. Dowels are inserted every 1.5–2 meters along wall length, in a staggered pattern. Dowel height: 12–15 cm.
Insulation (moss, hemp, jute) is placed between assembled rungs.
Openings
Doors and windows are cut into the logs during assembly. It is recommended to install window and door frames after the cabin has settled.
Roof
Roofing a log cabin is a labor-intensive process. The roof structure includes:
- roof truss system;
- roof covering.

Photo 6 – Roof sheathing
The truss system consists of: wall plate, rafters, ridge, struts, and sheathing. The roof is built from: vapor barrier film, thermal insulation, waterproofing, counter-battens, sheathing, and roofing material.
IMPORTANT! Ensure a proper rainwater drainage system.
Settling
After construction, wait for the settling process. This can take from 6 months to 2 years.
Chinking and finishing
After settling, chink the cabin, install windows and doors, and carry out finishing work.

$ Cost of Building a Log Cabin
The total cost of building a real log cabin can be estimated from a detailed project, including materials, labor, finishing, utilities, and other elements.

Prices vary depending on cabin size and structural complexity.
How much does it cost to build a log cabin?
On average, log cabin construction costs from $170 per square meter. If the cabin is built 'turnkey', the price starts at $350 per square meter.
