Lawn Care
Green color calms and relaxes. It also looks incredibly beautiful under sunlight. Why not use it to decorate the area around your home?
Of course, repainting the building facade in green is not recommended, though it could still be a good option. However, creating a magnificent, lush lawn that becomes a stunning feature of your yard is definitely worth doing.

So, you've decided to create a lawn. The hard work of soil preparation and planting is already behind you. Now, the main hope lies in the fact that the plants grow only where you planted them—just keep watering them. But it’s not that simple. To keep the grass even and healthy, you need to fertilize it regularly, remove weeds periodically, mow it, and trim the edges. So, once you’ve planted the lawn, be ready to get your hands dirty.
All lawn maintenance tasks can be divided by season. This is because grass needs rest at certain times of year, requires feeding at others, and sometimes just needs watering and cleaning.
Spring
Spring is the most critical time of year. The beauty and vibrancy of your lawn in the following seasons depend heavily on how much effort you invest now. As soon as the snow melts, you must clear the lawn of old grass and leaves. Use rakes with wide tines for this, and comb the debris in two perpendicular directions.
Next, aerate the lawn. This can be done using various aerators. The simplest method is raking the lawn with rakes that slightly cut into the soil during debris removal.
You can also wear special sandals with spikes on the sole. These pierce the soil, creating air channels.
Mechanical aerators are especially convenient. They not only puncture the soil to improve oxygen flow but also collect debris.
During cleaning, pay close attention to the grass and soil condition. If you notice signs of powdery mildew or mold, treat the lawn with fungicides.
After cleaning, apply fertilizers. Nitrogen is most commonly used—it promotes dense growth and rich green color. For strong root development, use phosphorus.
After these tasks, you’ll clearly see how your lawn survived winter. If you spot bare patches or yellowing grass, remove them and reseed with the same grass type. If grass is present but growth is sparse, lightly loosen the soil and reseed with 50% of the required seed amount. After seeding, water thoroughly with nitrogen-based fertilizer.
When grass reaches 7–8 cm, perform the first mowing. Choose dry, sunny days—this prevents the mower wheels from slipping and avoids clogging with wet grass. Subsequent mowing should occur every two weeks.
Besides mowing, lawn edges need trimming. Use shovels, scissors, or electric trimmers to shape edges around trees, fences, and other features. A common trick: mow edges slightly higher than the rest of the lawn to create a subtle raised effect.
Summer
If you put in maximum effort in spring, summer maintenance mainly involves watering and mowing. Water every other day. During hot weather, increase frequency—but avoid standing water.
Water in the evening to prevent leaf scorch from droplets under direct sunlight.
Mid-summer is ideal for liquid fertilizer application.
Continue mowing twice a month.
Autumn
Autumn requires slightly more effort. First, clear the lawn of dry grass and fallen leaves—this prevents disease.
Second, repair damaged areas by reseeding where grass suffered from sun or excess moisture. Also, aerate soil to prevent waterlogging from autumn rains.
It’s recommended to mow the lawn for the last time in late October. Afterward, apply fertilizer.
Winter
Even though grass rests in winter, follow key tips to keep it healthy and attractive. First, avoid using a roller on the lawn. Second, never shovel snow from pathways onto the lawn. Also, avoid walking on the lawn if snow depth is under 15–20 cm.
During thaws, inspect the lawn for ice crusts. If present, remove them with regular rakes—under the crust, grass and soil lack oxygen, which harms growth and soil quality.
In short, lawn care isn’t just about spring and summer. Following these seasonal routines ensures your lawn greets you with lush green shoots and a vibrant look every spring.
