Building a Log Cabin from Round-Sawn Wood
Round-sawn Timber
Traditional log cabins are, of course, built from round-sawn, pre-treated timber. Such structures are admired for their attractive design, ability to retain heat over long periods, and ecological sustainability.

The cost of the material varies due to:
- quality of the timber;
- wood species;
- dimensions.
Purchasing such material is straightforward. Prices start from $200 per cubic meter. The key is to choose timber without defects. To assess wood quality, review expert recommendations.
Selecting timber:
- Round-sawn timber is specially processed in factory conditions. Therefore, high-quality round timber has uniform dimensions and standardized joints for easier assembly;
- purchase timber harvested in winter;
- ensure there is no bluing – a sign of fungal or mold infestation;
- consider purchasing already treated with antiseptics and fire retardants to simplify construction;
- assess wood strength by ring density – the denser the rings, the stronger the material;
- check for signs of woodworm infestation;
- prefer softwood species with resinous structure: pine, spruce, larch, cedar.
IMPORTANT! Timber thickness must match regional climate conditions. For average winter temperatures up to -20°C, 15 cm thickness is sufficient. For average winter temperatures down to -30°C, minimum thickness should be 22 cm.
Profiled Timber
Building a cabin from profiled, specially prepared timber is simple and fast, especially compared to log construction.

Cost of profiled timber, already with notches, starts at $300. Price increases with larger dimensions.
Advantages
Profiled timber is manufactured on planing machines. Advantages include a smooth, uniform surface allowing precise alignment with minimal gaps.
Due to pre-fabricated joints (dowel/groove), assembly is fast. This type of joint provides enhanced thermal insulation and better protection against cold. The labyrinth-type lock offers high thermal resistance.
Finishing costs for a cabin built with profiled timber are minimal. Internal and external finishing with special materials can be avoided by applying protective treatments directly to the timber.
IMPORTANT! Choose timber carefully. Defective timber includes: uneven surfaces, mold damage, woodworm holes, bluing, cracks. Avoid wet, summer- or spring-harvested wood. Select thickness based on regional climate.
Construction Stages of a Log Cabin
Log cabin assembly follows a step-by-step process, regardless of whether timber or logs are used. Correct sequence of construction:
- foundation;
- laying logs or timber;
- chinking;
- finishing work.

When laying the material, plan for openings: windows and doors. Two options exist: pre-designed openings in factory-built structures, or cutting them during on-site construction.
Additional Convenience Features
When building a log cabin, you can construct various structures on the site to enhance comfort and coziness for your country home or dacha.

Gazebos
You can build a cozy gazebo. Family and friends gather here for celebrations. Enjoy relaxing in a shaded gazebo on warm evenings or hot days.
Gazebos can be equipped in various ways: install a table with benches, connect electricity, place a barbecue or grill, install water supply, etc.
Cost of a gazebo made from natural wood depends on material cost, structural complexity, and internal fittings. Price starts from $300 per square meter.
Well
If the site allows and if there's no option to connect piped water to the cabin, you can install a well. From such a well, you’ll get pure, healthy water.
How to Build a Log Cabin Yourself
After learning about the main materials and construction stages, you can begin building a wooden log cabin yourself, carrying out all necessary tasks.
Advantages of self-construction:
- quality control;
- significant cost savings;
- no time limitations.
How much can you save by building yourself? Approximately 40% or more compared to professional construction costs. For example, if you order a 3x3 meter cabin with materials, excluding finishing, the cost would be from $5,000.
If you only purchase the cabin structure and build it yourself, savings could reach $2,000 or more.
