Useful life hacks for those who care about their health

Experts constantly debate the benefits of masks, but one thing we know for sure: they are not available in stores or pharmacies. Homemade masks can solve this problem — you can make them at home. We provide details and also recall how to wear and dispose of them properly.

When should you wear a mask?

  • If you are sick, sneezing or coughing.
  • If you come into contact with infected individuals and provide them with medical assistance.
  • While also remembering to sanitize your hands with antiseptic (how to make it at home, we explained here).

WHO's opinion: healthy people do not need to wear masks.

Rosпотребнадзор's opinion: masks can slow the spread of a virus. But they are only effective in closed spaces and crowded places.

Can't find masks in stores. How to make them yourself?
WHO specialists warn: homemade masks are less effective than medical ones (but still better than having no mask at all).

Make a disposable mask from fabric

Take dense cotton fabric (on video — a 45×45 cm scarf) and two elastic bands, each 18 cm long. Fold the scarf in half and fold it like a concertina. The edges should be folded over and either sewn with a needle or stitched on a machine. Then you just need to thread the elastic bands and tie them with knots.

Or a reusable mask with a replaceable filter

A more complex instruction that allows you to make a reusable mask with a removable filter. After each use, such a mask should be washed with soap or cleaning product, then steamed using a steam generator and ironed while hot.

Or simply fold from fabric

This is probably the fastest option in an emergency — if you suddenly need a mask right now and don’t have needles or thread at hand. For example, if you need to quickly go to a store or pharmacy. And of course, the fabric should be washed after use.

Use old clothes

Once again, a simple option for quick trips to the store. All you need is an old unnecessary t-shirt and scissors.

Important

No matter what mask you choose, it must:

  • fit snugly over the nose, but still allow free breathing;
  • have multiple layers of fabric;
  • and ear loops (elastic bands);
  • maintain its shape (if the mask is deformed, it is no longer suitable for use).

How to properly put on, wear, and remove a mask?

  • Before putting on the mask, sanitize your hands with antiseptic.
  • Make sure it fits snugly over the nose and there are no gaps between your face and the fabric.
  • Do not touch the mask while wearing it. If you accidentally touch the front of the mask, wash your hands with soap or sanitize with an alcohol-based solution.
  • Replace disposable masks every two hours and each time the fabric becomes wet.
  • Remove carefully: pull on the ear loops, trying not to touch the fabric. Then thoroughly wash your hands.
  • Put all masks into a sealed bag and throw it in the trash bin.
