As early as the 17th century, French architect François Mansart proposed using attic spaces as living and utility areas. Since then, the attic floor under a pitched roof has been called a “mansard” after the architect. The sloped ceiling surface restricts the usable living space, and if more than half of the non-living attic area is less than 1.8–2 meters in height, it’s better to avoid converting it into an attic. Heating devices (radiators, convectors) should be placed under the window units so that the inclined surface of the glass panel is “washed” by warm air.
