Alternative Window Sill: 7 Useful Ideas
How do we usually use window sills in an apartment? We place potted plants on them and cover them with curtains. Or just pile up small items that don’t have a better place to go. And again — cover them with curtains:)
The primary challenge in any city apartment is to organize space efficiently, using every square centimeter—including the window sill. How else can you make good use of it?
1. If it's the kitchen, it's simple: the height of the window sill often matches kitchen countertop height—90 cm. You can expand your workspace by replacing the sill with a countertop, or even install a sink there. This is convenient because the area along the window will be maximally illuminated by natural light, making it pleasant to wash dishes while enjoying the industrial view outside.
2. On the kitchen window sill, you can also install a dishwasher, an extra cabinet for dishes and small appliances. Don’t forget to include ventilation grilles in the part of the countertop and cabinet where the radiator is located, or consider relocating it.
3. If the kitchen windows face the sunny side and you enjoy cooking, consider growing herbs and chili peppers instead of traditional flowers on the sill. This activity always brings joy!
4. When the distance from floor to window is about 75 cm, it makes sense to convert the sill into a writing desk. The deeper the countertop, the more comfortable the workspace—minimum 50 cm is needed to fit a computer and a desk lamp. This solution suits a child’s room with a student, or setting up a home office in a bedroom. Open bookshelves under the sill can be used for books.
5. In apartments with low windows, the sill can be used as a bench or small sofa. It provides extra seating during home gatherings and offers a cozy spot to read a book on quiet evenings. You can even insulate the window and designate the area for your favorite cat or dog!
6. A window-sill sofa should be about 45 cm high, wide enough (60 cm or more), and preferably made of wood. A mattress, cushions, and a blanket will ensure comfort and coziness. However, if you have small children, ensure their safety: install railings, child locks on windows, or temporarily postpone this project.
7. Most people dream of a wide window sill, but if you're not among them, you can make it as narrow as possible, slightly protruding beyond the wall edge. This is often done by modern European architects. A simple solution with clear benefits: you’ll gain a bit more space in the room, and clutter won’t accumulate on the sill, making cleaning easier!
