In the past, kitchen buffets were very popular. Today, due to the appearance of new types of furniture, they have become antiques

They are usually installed by those who appreciate classical interior style. If the kitchen is planned to be designed in such a style, the buffet must be present here by necessity. The article will tell about the main features, types, and we will also offer you to familiarize yourself with a large number of themed photographs.

Types of Kitchen Buffets

In the traditional sense, a buffet is a massive closed cabinet where kitchen accessories are stored. The construction does not provide for the possibility of hanging. The upper part has a cabinet equipped with wooden doors with transparent or semi-transparent glass. In some models, there is a countertop between the upper and lower parts where often used accessories, figurines, vases, etc. are placed.

Depending on need, you can place an open or closed type buffet on the kitchen. The first ones are also called "displays". This is a special cabinet with shelves protected by glass doors. The construction includes a narrow or tall drawer placed on the floor. Another popular option is to make a display with a rectangular or square shape mounted on a kitchen cabinet. Such constructions are called supplements.

Products are divided into several categories depending on size or shape. The most optimal option is a three- or two-door cabinet with glass displays. This variant is popular in many ways due to the ability to store a large number of items. The lower closed cabinet can ensure comfortable use of bulky accessories, including pans, pots, kettles, or household appliances. The upper display of the kitchen buffet is intended for decorative purposes – for example, to place a serving table or a set.

This product takes up minimal free space. It is sufficient to plan the placement location near the wall in advance. In most cases, a buffet has a width of 1.2 to 2 meters, a height of up to two meters, and a depth of up to 45 centimeters.

On the other hand, you can use more modest-sized variants. A buffet-sideboard fits very well on a kitchen. The owner will not encounter difficulties related to selecting the location. The construction is designed so that it does not cause discomfort when moving residents around the kitchen area.

Where to Place a Buffet?

Although a kitchen with a buffet is more practical, you should think in advance about where to place it. If there is a spacious room, the optimal solution is to position the buffet near the table or next to the entrance. No visitor will fail to notice such a sideboard.

If there is plenty of free space in a separate room, it is better to place it there. Manufacturers provide furniture with a large number of additional sections. There is also the possibility of combining an angular display and a large sideboard. As practice shows, for greater practicality, it is provided with a large number of open shelves.

When purchasing a multi-compartment serving buffet, you can achieve the division of free space in a studio or regular apartment. Using such a buffet, the kitchen will be divided into two zones – for cooking and the living room. This solution is truly functional and convenient, as residents do not have to constantly go to the kitchen.

The following color solutions are the most popular:

  • brown. It is made in the color of wood. This variant is popular among those who love antiques, for whom it is important to preserve the authenticity of the overall design;
  • white. The white buffet for the kitchen is often used to create unique design solutions, where antique furniture blends well with modern interior items;
  • cherry. The main feature of such buffets is the effect of luxury. These buffets are usually made from expensive types of wood. The surface is generously coated with lacquer, giving the coating a glossy texture;
  • gray. Furniture painted in gray also fits well into an interior where antique and modern furniture items are combined.

Some companies and private restorers offer their customers an antique buffet for the kitchen, photos of which you can see below. The main feature is that the appearance imitates long-term use, including signs of wear.

Design Styles

To achieve a unified external appearance that will suit the kitchen, the buffet must meet several parameters, including not only size but also style of execution. You can try to change the old buffet yourself or buy ready-made products. In the latter case, several options are offered for selection.

  1. Classic buffet. Usually made from expensive wood species and additionally decorated with engraving or carving. It allows you to highlight the strictness of design.
  2. Countryside. Does not require any strictness or extravagance from the furniture. On the contrary, such a buffet can have a simple design or be artificially aged. In this case, two requirements are set – to use only natural wood and not protect its surface with lacquer or paint materials.
  3. Provence. In this case, kitchen buffets, photos of which you can see in this article, are usually used. Carved details are allowed, but they can be omitted. Such buffets are characteristic of this style. Simple and refined, at the same time accompanied by romantic elements. They blend perfectly with antique-style furniture. Manufacturers mainly use light colors.
  4. Retro. Such a buffet is usually artificially aged. Practice shows that it is very difficult to find authentic furniture made in this style today. The kitchen immediately fills with notes of warmth and comfort.
  5. Modern styles. In most cases, a modern kitchen buffet is made from plastic. Additionally, acrylic and matte glass are used. Chrome or polished aluminum inserts are allowed. There are no unnecessary details. The products are characterized by a smooth surface without decoration. They are simple and spacious. A large number of various accessories available inside ensure comfortable use.

Kitchen buffets were originally made from wood. This is an excellent material with high strength, beautiful and durable. However, manufacturers have begun to gradually shift to alternative options. MDF and particle board are increasingly used. The constructions made with their use are characterized by resistance to contamination, have good strength, and are easy to process, while having minimal cost.

Some kitchen buffets are made from plastic. Usually, this refers to manufacturing individual parts, although there are fully plastic models. They have minimal weight, they are hard to scratch, and can be given almost any desired shape.

Despite the fact that buffets are installed less and less in modern kitchens, they remain popular. The choice of a particular model variant largely depends on the designer's preferences and personal needs of the homeowner.
