House O by Alexis Dornier: Cozy Residence in Ubud Inspired by Sound Wave
Sculptural Expression of Sound and Space
House O by Alexis Dornier is a three-bedroom residence located in the picturesque surroundings of Ubud, Indonesia. Created for a musician-composer, the house represents both an architectural study and a personal sanctuary — inspired by the form of one sound wave.
At its heart lies a space of 1614 square feet (150 m²) on the second floor, which offers panoramic views of green rice fields and coconut palm columns. This upper section forms the sculptural climactic moment, unifying form and function.
Architecture Inspired by One Sound Wave
The architectural concept began with manipulating a single curved line, which evolved into a multi-level structure seamlessly intertwining the ground and roof. The result is a spatial experience that feels immersive, continuous, and rhythmically musical.
The exterior of the house is minimalist and refined, while its interior was designed to create a sense of 'being inside an instrument', where acoustics and spatial flow harmonize in a calm yet dramatic composition.
Materials and Acoustic Intentions
-
Wood-patterned surfaces frame the interior walls, enhancing warmth and resonance.
-
Low ceilings improve acoustic properties and define key spatial transitions, including the entrance to the house.
-
Every element, from ceiling curves to floor layouts, contributes to the unified sonic narrative of the house.
This is a sculptural environment, free from visual noise and unnecessary structure, creating a clean, serene sanctuary deeply embedded in its natural setting.
Creative Living with Purpose
Beyond its role as private housing, House O also functions as a hosting program for artists during certain months. Alexis Dornier conceived the house as a temporary refuge for international artists — offering a quiet, inspiring place for creative expression and renewal.
Connection to the Landscape
Situated among vibrant rice fields, House O opens up to its surroundings through large panoramic windows and an elevated loft, providing visual and emotional access to nature. The house does not simply stand in the landscape — it listens, responds, and reflects it.

House O by Alexis Dornier is a poetic response to both place and sound. It's a living instrument — minimalist in materials yet profound in expression — connecting mindful acoustics, sculptural form, and the rhythm of Ubud’s landscape into a space created for inspiration.
