Single Bed Sizes

When choosing a single bed, you should first pay attention to its dimensions, which include several measurements. The main one is the size of the sleeping area. The standard size of a single bed is 80x190 centimeters. The length can vary up to 210 cm, and the width up to 100 cm. When choosing a bed size, consider the following:

  • your height;
  • sleeping habits;
  • available space under the bed.

Height is straightforward – no one wants to hit their head and feet on the bed edges or sleep with sleeves hanging off the bed. Sleep habits are equally important: if you tend to turn over frequently and change positions during sleep, it might be better to choose a single bed with a width of 120-140 centimeters.

Space under the bed should be considered in any case, but especially when the sleeping area does not match the overall size of the bed. This applies to, for example, platform beds where the base extends significantly beyond the mattress. Other factors that can influence your choice include bed height and headboard height.

Other things to consider:

  • type of bed frame;
  • material of the bed;
  • additional storage space;
  • choice of mattress.

The bed frame can be solid and rigid or flexible and grid-like. Naturally, the second option is considered more beneficial for health – a frame with wooden slats that support proper body alignment during sleep and provide mattress ventilation. Usually, the slats are made from strong beech wood and may differ in mounting type and spacing between each other.

Attention! The slats themselves also have different widths: a frame with wide slats is considered orthopedic, while a frame with narrow slats is anatomic. The latter reacts more precisely to load, although the narrower slats are compensated for by a greater number of slats. For people with significant weight, orthopedic frames with maximum slat width should be chosen.

Wooden Bed - The Healthiest Choice

Progress has reached the point where artificial materials like particle board (DSP) and medium-density fiberboard (MDF) are increasingly used in furniture production. The former is quite durable, and the latter is excellent for finishing. However, despite their advantages and some natural components, the glues and resins used in manufacturing these boards are not ideal companions for sleep. In defense of DSP beds, they can sometimes be even stronger and more aesthetically pleasing than wooden ones, but natural materials remain the best choice.

Natural color and pattern richness make wood a versatile material in the hands of designers. No matter which bedroom style is chosen, there will be a color, texture, and shape in which wood fits perfectly into the setting. Especially since all design directions currently in vogue encourage the use of wooden furniture.

A single wooden bed made from untreated, aged, or lacquered and polished wood with carved details or in the best traditions of minimalism is certainly a practical and safe place to sleep, as well as a central decorative element in the bedroom.

Steel Beds

Steel does not necessarily look strict and cold: steel beds beautifully complement romantic interiors and bring an element of mystery and vintage charm. A forged single bed is undoubtedly a standout feature in any interior.

Tip: The headboard made from twisted metal can be enhanced with appropriate vintage decor and contrasted with materials that create a visual contrast, such as light sheer curtains, fluffy carpets, or, conversely, matte floor tiles or stone. Depending on the overall setting, a forged bed creates a specific mood.

For those indifferent to vintage and cottage styles, there are many options for sturdy and lightweight single beds made from metal in modern minimalist styles without any decorations. Those who champion simplicity and minimalism can sleep peacefully in the cold gleam of their bed.

Single Beds With Drawers

Having drawers for bedding and other items built into the bed itself is an undeniable advantage. Single beds with drawers allow you to avoid cluttering space with additional bedside tables and wardrobes. The area under the bed is still empty – why not use it efficiently? Depending on the construction details, storage can take the form of:

  • sliding drawers;
  • a solid storage compartment under the entire surface of the bed.

Sliding drawers can vary in size and even be arranged in multiple levels. Sometimes a solid sliding drawer conceals an additional sleeping area. If the bed has a lifting mechanism, the entire surface from the frame with slats to the floor can be used as a storage drawer for bulky items. For those who value space and the possibility of transforming furniture, it is recommended to purchase the bed and storage drawers separately. This will be affordable and very practical.

Single Beds With Mattress

Generally, single beds, like other types of beds, are sold separately from mattresses. This is due to the wide variety of mattresses available: they have different fillings and firmness levels, allowing for individualized selection.

It is more convenient to buy single beds with mattresses in the same store and preferably from the same manufacturer. Such a purchase will be more affordable compared to situations where you might have to return, replace, or custom-order a mattress. This situation can easily occur since European and American manufacturers use different metric systems. Thus, a European mattress will not fit an American single bed frame and vice versa.
