Before and After: A Stylish Light Kitchen, 10 m² in a Stalin-era Apartment
How did the designer manage to create a memorable modern interior while preserving the atmosphere of the old building
This kitchen is located in a three-room apartment in a building constructed in 1951. The challenge for designer Ekaterina Lyubimkina was to create a modern functional interior while maintaining the spirit of the Stalinist era. Ekaterina took the minimalist Scandinavian style as a basis, with warm wood, white and accent black as the primary tones. Let's see how the kitchen transformed.

Initially, the kitchen was a typical narrow and long space with only one window, creating a feeling of confinement and discomfort. The space was insufficiently functional, and its layout did not support comfortable time usage.

One of the key stages in the transformation was the decision to combine the kitchen with the living room. This significantly expanded the space, making it brighter and more open. A stylish glass partition, decorated in elegant arched forms, was installed for zoning between the kitchen and living room. It features solid shutters that meet modern standards.

The kitchen cabinet was custom-made, allowing maximum use of the height up to the ceiling cornice in classical style. Monochrome cabinet fronts blend seamlessly with doors made of textured glass, creating a sense of lightness and sophistication.

The countertop made of HPL panel is durable and easy to maintain, making it an ideal choice for active use. It is resistant to damage, moisture, and high temperatures, retaining its attractive appearance over many years. The sink placed by the window allows enjoying the view outside while cooking, adding extra comfort and inspiration to daily culinary activities.

The kitchen is equipped with all necessary appliances, making it incredibly functional and convenient for daily use. The increased storage space helps maintain order and organization. Stylish hardware and atmospheric lighting, created in the form of wall sconces and pendant lights above the dining table, add coziness and create a pleasant atmosphere for family dinners and gatherings with friends.
