Before and After: Stunning Transformation of a 'Bored' Kitchen in a Brezhnev-Era Apartment
The difference before and after the renovation is dramatic
This single-room 31 sq. m apartment was transformed by designer Elena Vertiy in just 5 weeks. The main task was to organize the living space while preserving the layout and original windows. We show how the kitchen was transformed.

Before the renovation, the kitchen looked lifeless with outdated furniture and obsolete finishes. The walls were covered with dull wallpaper that only emphasized the gloomy atmosphere. The old furniture was uncomfortable and not functional, and bulky appliances took up too much space.

The decision to equip the kitchen in a minimalist style was key. By omitting upper cabinet doors, the space gained lightness and freedom. The lower cabinet section was designed with sufficient storage space, and the washing machine was hidden to maintain a clean look. A compact blue retro-style refrigerator adds charm and nostalgic notes to the kitchen.

The windows were simply painted white and adorned with curtains that softly filter the light. Artificial stone on the countertop became the main accent, styled in warm beige-blue tones. This combination creates a visual contrast that makes the kitchen a stylish and modern place for both cooking and socializing.

Another significant element of the new design was painting the ceiling in a bright color. This choice adds dynamism and animates the space, visually expanding and lifting the room, giving it style and individuality. A small table and soft chairs in the cabinet’s color harmonize well with the overall kitchen style. The finishing touch was a painting in the main tones of the interior, giving the space a finished and cozy feel.

The kitchen in the Brezhnev-era apartment after transformation became a vibrant and functional space where it’s now pleasant to cook and spend time.
