Flavor of Jiangnan - Restaurant by LDH Architectural Design in Nanjing, China
Restaurant Rooted in Jiangnan Culture
The name Flavor of Jiangnan (Shizhi) speaks not only of enjoying food but also of memories. "Stewing" evokes the image of slow preparation of delicacies, and "flavor" brings joy from taste. Together they embody not only culinary heritage but also a lifestyle, rhythm and poetic culture of the southern Chinese region of Jiangnan.
Located on the 50th floor of the Golden Edge World hotel, the restaurant offers a magnificent view of Nanjing city, the Qinhuai River and Zhongshan Mountain, creating a space for premium lunch that connects history with modernity.
An Architectural Dialogue Between Past and Present
Designer Lü Dahua interprets the essence of Jiangnan water cities—graceful bridges, winding rivers and poetic courtyards—through a contemporary lens. His design celebrates the refined cuisine of Huaiyang, infusing the spirit of Jiangnan into space.
Guests are greeted by an entrance sequence in the style of a tea room, where winding paths imitate patterns from traditional gardens. This spatial journey unfolds in zones for communication, contemplation and relaxation, hidden beneath deconstructed frameworks reinterpreting folk architecture.
Interiors Inspired by Jiangnan Elegance
The interior color palette is based on dark brown tones, enhanced with brass accents and textured wooden elements, creating warmth and sophistication. Furniture in shades of reddish-brown, oak and black conveys calm elegance, while soft shadows and gentle lighting create an immersive atmosphere.
Private dining areas are designed in the architectural style of Jiangnan cities—self-contained yet interconnected, evoking intimacy and ritual. Floor-to-ceiling windows break the boundaries with the urban landscape, allowing city light to enliven lunch.
Cherry Blossom as a Cultural Motif
A recurring element in the design is cherry blossoms, the city flower of Nanjing and a symbol of resilience, beauty and the 'five blessings'. The flower's form inspires sculptural ceiling patterns, custom ceramic tiles and delicate decorative accents throughout the restaurant. The motif creates a sense of continuity, transforming space into a blooming landscape hovering above the city.
Spatial Philosophy and Cultural Resonance
More than just a restaurant, Flavor of Jiangnan is an artistic monologue about place and memory. Through reinterpreting traditional architectural forms in a modern context, the design transcends functional dining and shapes cultural identity and emotional connection.
As demonstrated by Lü Dahua, architecture can serve as a bridge between heritage and innovation, bringing the spirit of Jiangnan's poetic landscapes into contemporary urban rhythms.
