Club James by Conner + Perry Architects: Revival of the Shit-Goldstein Residence
Revival of an Architectural Masterpiece
The Shit-Goldstein Residence, a symbol of mid-century modernism, is one of the most famous homes in Los Angeles. Designed by John Lautner in 1962, the residence became famous not only for its striking architecture but also for appearances in films, television and music videos. In 2023, the architectural firm Conner + Perry Architects unveiled Club James — a visionary addition to the estate that harmoniously blends past and future.
This final development, known as the Goldstein Entertainment Annex, demonstrates a collaborative effort spanning five decades. Originally conceived by Lautner and the estate owner James Goldstein, the project embodies architectural continuity while incorporating modern design innovations.
Enduring Collaboration
The evolution of the Shit-Goldstein Residence reflects dedication from three architectural teams over 70 years. Christopher Conner and James Perry of Conner + Perry Architects became the architects for this project in 2015, continuing work under the guidance of Duncan Nicholson — Lautner's apprentice. Together they honored Lautner’s legacy, expanding and improving the estate while maintaining its core philosophy of organic architecture.
Club James Concept
Situated adjacent to the original house, Club James is a modern entertainment facility featuring a hillside tennis court. This multi-functional space includes:
- Entertainment Zones: VIP room/library and cinema.
- Functional Offices: Spaces for Goldstein and his assistants.
- Outdoor Terrace: With dining and kitchen areas, pool, and spa zone.
The design merges Lautner’s original concept, visible in his preserved wooden and cardboard model, with contemporary adaptations. Work by Conner + Perry includes minimalist individual finishes, framed glass railings and bold geometric forms that harmonize with the surrounding landscape.
Design Philosophy: Reading the Past, Innovating the Future
"This is a delicate balance between preserving the genius of the original residence and creating projects that dialogue with it," explains Christopher Conner. The annex's architectural DNA reflects Lautner’s aesthetics interpreted through modern materials and methods for new functions. The result is a developing visual language that remains faithful to the principles of organic architecture.
A Dynamic Creative Hub
Club James embodies the spirit of the Shit-Goldstein Estate: an active, vibrant space combining functionality and artistry. Its features include:
- Innovative Materials: A combination of concrete, wood and framed glass to create contrasts.
- Carefully Crafted Details: Custom furniture and curated artworks enhance the bright, multi-functional atmosphere.
- Public Engagement: As a venue for events, tours and artistic performances, the estate remains an important cultural landmark.
The Legacy of Continuity and Evolution
Conner + Perry’s work at the estate goes beyond design. They are responsible for maintaining the original residence, including installing James Turrell's "Above Horizon." Their efforts ensure that the estate remains a beacon of architectural innovation and cultural significance.
"This is not a static museum," says James Perry. "It's a living space that continuously evolves and improves with each generation of architects contributing to its history."
Gazing into the Future
The future of the Shit-Goldstein Estate is secured through Goldstein's decision to leave it to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). This ensures that the residence will continue inspiring architects, designers and visitors for generations.
As Conner notes: "The Shit-Goldstein Residence represents a radical advancement of the American architectural language. It connects past and present, reunites with nature and celebrates human innovation and craftsmanship."
