How to Fit Everything in 35 sq m: Stylish Design of a Small Studio

This vibrant studio was designed by architect and designer Oksana Oleynik for a young creative woman. The designer and client found common ground in their love for Wes Anderson's films, incorporating elements from his work into the interior: symmetry, recurring arch motifs, and a distinctive color palette.

About the Layout

The apartment initially had a long rectangular shape and was completely empty, with no partitions. Near the entrance stood a plumbing stack, which determined the placement of the bathroom. According to the new plan, the entrance smoothly transitions into a pass-through kitchen, with the living room-dining area organized by the window and a bedroom tucked into a niche.

About the Kitchen

The kitchen is a pass-through space: one side features the work surface with sink and cooktop. The other side houses a large built-in cabinet, part of which serves as storage for the entrance area while another part belongs to the kitchen. The remaining two-door cabinet is used for clothing and bedding storage.

The kitchen area is highlighted by a bright graphic floor tile. All necessary appliances are included, with the washing machine hidden behind one of the lower fronts. Upper sections of the kitchen unit with balconies serve for storage. The main highlight is a mosaic backsplash featuring stylized architectural elements.

About the Dining Room and Living Area

As requested by the owner, terrazzo-patterned ceramic tile was laid on the floor throughout the rest of the apartment. The living area is square-shaped, allowing for convenient placement of all necessary items. The windowsill was widened to create a comfortable spot for relaxation. The TV unit, shelves and dining table feature smooth lines that harmonize with the arch forms of the interior.

The sofa is not a pull-out, as the client doesn't need extra sleeping space — it's only for comfortable reading or watching TV. The wall behind the sofa is decorated with a decorative panel featuring arches and mountain imagery.

About the Bedroom

The bedroom was set up in a niche, sized to fit a bed. The bedroom is separated from the living area by a curtain, allowing easy space transformation. A small shelf above the headboard is handy for placing a phone or book. The wallpaper with rhythmic arch patterns harmonizes with the larger arch forms in the living area. A ceiling cornice provides ambient lighting that creates a cozy atmosphere.

About the Entrance

The entrance area is only 5.5 sq m, but a built-in cabinet was fitted here along with a mirror and bench in the niche arch. The bench's upholstery was deliberately chosen to match the kitchen cabinet colors. The entrance and interior doors were custom-made.

About the Bathroom

The bathroom is bold, bright and dynamic. Walls are clad with Italian tiles featuring graphic prints. The main highlight is the ceiling depicting swimmers spinning in a centrifuge. This bathroom accommodates a shower cubicle, toilet with installation and shelving for storage. The black sink on an elegant base also functions as a piece of art.
