How to Revive Old Furniture: 5 Easy DIY Tutorials
Decorators' Tips
What to do if furniture has become unusable but you're reluctant to throw it away? In this case, you can try breathing new life into old interior items.
We looked up five ways to revive your favorite pieces, as shown by decorators Anastasia Kasparyan and Victoria Pashinskaya.
1. Artistic Decoupage
The decoupage technique is very popular in design circles. Anastasia Kasparyan shared a tutorial on how to decorate furniture facades in this style.
You Will Need:
- a printed color photo or painting,
- special glue,
- painter's tape,
- a hairdryer,
- brushes.

Place the image face-down on the facade, then brush it with decoupage glue. After that, smooth it out with a roller and dry it with a hairdryer. Once it's dry, remove the paper by soaking it in water. Finally, secure the image with varnish.

2. Cross-Stitch Painting
In addition to painting or repairing old furniture, you can also paint it. Anastasia Kasparyan told us how to do it at home.
You Will Need:
- a picture/drawing,
- a ruler,
- paints.

The method is based on cross-stitch embroidery. First, you need to prepare and grid the chosen surface, then transfer the drawing with colored paints.
3. Industrial Braiding
You can also create a decorative pattern using nails and ribbons. Anastasia Kasparyan believes such an art object fits perfectly in a loft or masculine-style room.
You Will Need:
- a drawing/picture,
- nails,
- ribbons.

First, draw the image on the surface and nail it around the edges. Then connect the nails with ribbons one by one.

4. Soft Pouf
Old furniture can be made soft and beautiful, like a designer pouf. Anastasia Kasparyan revealed the secret of how to make this happen.
You Will Need:
- a mesh, metal urn or wire-wrapped,
- wool threads.

First, sketch the pattern on the chosen base. Then transfer it to the furniture facade following the method of embroidery on fabric. It's better to decorate the finished composition with self-made pompons glued to it.

5. Pipe Decor
If you don't want to spend time creating patterns or upholstering furniture, you can simply decorate it with leftover building materials — for example, pipes.
You Will Need:
- pipes,
- screws,
- decoration.

Pipes need to be carefully cut into pieces, then nailed to the facade with screws and decorated further. Victoria Pashinskaya suggests using the resulting structure as a standalone interior item, turning it into a tea table or footstool, or using it as a storage niche for accessories.
