Preparing your garden for beautiful summer blooming now

To enjoy a vibrant and fragrant garden on your plot, you should start planting it right now.

March is an excellent month for preparing a summer flower bed. We have selected various plant options that can germinate on your dacha in just a few months.

1. Echinacea

Pink, yellow, burgundy, and white petals of echinacea are a real magnet for bees and butterflies. If you plant these flowers in your garden, it will definitely come alive with new colors.

However, its flowering period falls in mid-July, one year after planting. It is important to sow the seedlings before the 20th of March, so you still have time.

2. Lobularia (Annual Alyssum)

You can observe this plant on urban flower beds — it grows as a dense and beautiful carpet. Lobularia includes more than 100 subspecies and is sown from mid-March to early April.

To ensure seeds sprout, they should be lightly dusted with moist soil — germination occurs in 10–12 days. The optimal time to transplant to the ground is the end of May.

3. Verbena

A low-maintenance and elegant flower to admire until the first frost.

But don’t delay with seedlings — sow the seeds before March 20th, pre-soaking them in a growth stimulator. It is important to remember that you should not cover the seedlings with soil during sowing.

Verbena will start to germinate in 15–20 days, and it can be transplanted into the ground in the second half of May.

4. Climbing Alyssum

This flower is named after its vine, which can reach up to five meters in height. Alyssum should be sown before the end of March — and it will bloom actively in summer.

5. Iris

Fragrant iris often decorates alpine hillsides. The plant exists in five forms: bitter, umbrella-shaped, feathery, evergreen, and hibernum.

Its blooming starts in May–June, so you don’t need to rush with seedlings: sow seeds until April, and transplant them into sunny spots in May.

6. Cleome

A flower that blooms actively from June until frost, cleome will make your garden unique and attract hundreds of bees.

Seeds should be sown at a depth of 1.5 cm, and once they germinate, transplant them into pots. It is preferable to move the plant into the garden in the second half of May. Flowers should be spaced about 50 cm apart.

7. Climbing Cobea

This climbing plant flowers until October and is perfect for greening balconies or gazebos.

Sowing cobea should be done before the 20th of March, pre-soaking seeds in a growth stimulator. Transplanting onto grass or into the ground is acceptable in early June, as the flower does not tolerate spring frosts well.

8. Bellflowers

Bellflowers include 300 species — among them are two-meter giants and five-centimeter dwarfs. In our country, only 13 varieties of these flowers can be found.

Seeds should be sown superficially without covering with soil. Germination can be expected in about a week.

9. Garden Pink

Abundantly and long-blooming garden pink has undeniable advantages over its relatives: it is drought-resistant and capable of germinating between stones.

To germinate, the seeds require three weeks, so begin sowing in March.

10. Brachiea Iris-like

A very hardy flower, which can be sown until the 20th of March. Seeds should only be gently pressed into the soil.

It is preferable to transplant brachiea into hanging boxes or pots in late May.

11. Lion's Mouth

Lion's mouth was once seen on every plot, but today its popularity is not as high. It’s a pity — because the flowers look magnificent due to their conical shape.

Seeds should be sown before the end of March into loose soil with sand added. Do not overwater the seedlings, and it is better to plant the seedlings in the garden in mid-May — lion’s mouth tolerates cold well.

12. Annual Phlox

In Russia, phlox is sown through seedlings until the end of March, and the first sprouts appear in 5–8 days. As soon as the seedlings emerge, you can start fertilizing (twice per season).

13. Summer Levkoy

Levkoy can be planted from mid-February to March 20th. Seeds should be dusted with river sand and moistened with a spray bottle. Immediately after germination, the seedlings should be moved to a cool place to prevent death.

14. February Flowers

Plants that you couldn’t plant in February can be sown in March. For example, heliotrope, lavender, and lobelia bloom beautifully in July.

Besides the above-listed, you can also sow the following flowers in March: sea aster, sweet rocket, venidium, silver dollar, decorative cabbage, osteospermum, sweet woodruff, sea aster, echium, ageratum, annual asters, arctotis, baby's eyes, gazania, helichrysum, sweet pea, tobacco plant, penstemon, salvia, celosia.
