8 Kitchen Layouts with Area Less Than 10 Square Meters

There are very few standard kitchen layouts – which is clearly reflected in the very term \"standard.\" Most kitchens in familiar homes are square or rectangular, with an entrance from the corridor opposite a window (in half the cases, a balcony or loggia is adjacent).

Within such a standard \"box\" it is necessary to arrange a functional cooking area, spacious cabinets for numerous appliances and dishes, and not forget about a cozy \"dining area\" – a place for meals. Usually, all these elements are distributed along the perimeter. But there are also alternative solutions.

Let’s examine 8 typical kitchen layouts.

1. Hot Zone + Dining Table

This kitchen layout is typical for one- and two-room apartments in P-44T series buildings (kitchen area slightly over 7 square meters).

In the example, we see a variant with partial demolition of the corridor wall – this is possible only in special cases and with official approval. If approval is not possible, we keep the standard opening. This does not compromise the concept but makes the kitchen slightly more confined.

Placing the stove and sink in the kitchen peninsula area also requires approval. This option suits young couples without children, provided the living area is located elsewhere in the apartment.

2. Sink by the Window

This example also features an unconventional solution requiring approval but dramatically transforming the space. A sink by the window is common in Western apartments. This choice appeals to those who value aesthetics over practicality. After all, a window in the \"work zone\" can be inconvenient in daily life.

The P-44T series of buildings is continuously upgraded by engineers and architects. Recently, many new buildings have been designed and constructed with original and striking kitchen layouts: a bay window on one wall visually (and functionally) expands the space. Kitchen area is about 8 square meters.

3. Kitchen-Bar

This layout option suits those who don’t shy away from experimentation. The refrigerator is installed under the bar counter. The practicality of this concept can be debated endlessly – every family has different rhythms and preferences. But the visual impact is undeniable.

Keep in mind this layout fits rectangular kitchens without bay windows (if there’s an extra meter in length).

4. Kitchen-Dining Area

This kitchen’s original layout closely resembles the previous one, but with a key difference: the entrance is on the side, not opposite the bay window. In P-44T series buildings, such layouts are more common in three-room apartments but may also appear in smaller ones in corner or additional sections. This entrance placement allows shifting the work surface and sink to the shorter side, freeing up space for a large table. One wall of the bay window can host a cozy sofa, adding extra comfort.

However, most typical homes feature rectangular kitchens. Significantly expanding the possibilities of such a simple space is possible through a balcony that can be insulated.

For example, this kitchen layout is typical for I-79-99 series buildings, though it appears in other series as well. In the examples we’ll examine (No. 5 and 6), kitchen area is slightly over 9 square meters.

5. Warm Balcony

This solution again prevents placing a dining table. It is replaced by a bar counter. The kitchen layout is linear – the work zone is distributed along one wall. Opposite, additional storage spaces are arranged (the refrigerator is located in one of the built-in cabinets).

6. Dining on the Stove

This solution also uses a bar counter instead of a table but avoids approval for balcony insulation and connection to the kitchen. A clear downside: the dining area is too compact and located too close to the hot zone – near the stove.

Still, if owners are fans of trendy restaurants, they’ll feel right at home. The solution will also appeal to those for whom cooking is a special ritual requiring an audience.

Many standard kitchens are square, with the entrance opposite the window or in a wall perpendicular to it. Let’s examine two solutions based on kitchen layouts with an area of no more than 10 square meters.

7. Kitchen Island

Here’s another solution: dining literally on the stove, allowing cooking and eating without changing position. This option enables fulfilling dreams of a kitchen island in a panel-type apartment, but a dining table must be abandoned. As the saying goes, tastes differ – everyone will find a suitable solution.

On the plan, we see an insulated balcony section with access to a cold semi-bay area. This unusual balcony design is typical for P-111M series buildings.

8. Tradition + Modernity

This layout combines a traditional solution (L-shaped kitchen unit) with a modern one (compact table adjacent to the windowsill). Balcony insulation does not involve connecting it to the kitchen, so no approval is required. Once again, on the plan we see an insulated balcony section with access to a cold semi-bay area. This balcony solution is typical for P-111M series buildings.
