The loft style remains as relevant today as it was years ago and does not intend to give up its position anytime soon. Together with an expert, we share tips on how to bring this style into your interior.

The loft style (loft) originated in the USA in the 1940s. This direction continues to evolve and has not lost its relevance. With Anna Pokhodnyeva, we tell you which stylistic and decorative solutions give an interior the aesthetic of a loft.

Anna Pokhodnyeva is an expert and designer at the In my box studio, who views each project as searching for the perfect layout and compositional solution.

Loft Style: What Is It Like? Brutal Finish

Gray concrete, terracotta brick masonry and its imitation, rough textured walls and ceilings without plastering, and natural stone create an atmosphere of a non-residential, industrial space in the interior.

High Ceilings

High ceilings are a must for the loft style. In our reality, three-meter or higher ceilings are more of an exception.

To 'remove' the ceiling, choose white shades of paint — it will visually expand the space, make it spacious and brighten it up. The effect can be enhanced with glossy enamel.

Mixed Lighting and Open Wiring

Spot lighting in different zones of the living room or kitchen-dining area will help set the right accents: combine massive chandeliers, technical spotlights, and bulb lights without shades.

There is no need to hide or mask the electrical wiring — for a loft, hanging and entwined wires are absolutely acceptable.

No Curtains or Drapes

Windows of real lofts are not usually covered with light curtains or heavy drapes — consider metal blinds or Roman shades made of rough fabrics.

Wooden Plank Flooring

If financially possible, prefer natural wood for flooring, especially light-colored.

However, to recreate the loft style, it's acceptable to use laminate, PVC tiles, or ceramic granite that imitates stone and concrete surfaces.

Original Furniture

Furniture should not be uniform or rigid. On the contrary, choose chairs, sofas, and armchairs that contrast with wall and floor colors. Eclectic furniture sets are also acceptable, for example, chairs of different models and textures arranged around a dining table.

Checklist: How to Decorate a Room in Loft Style

If possible, get rid of partitions or minimize their presence. Connect balconies with living spaces — in a small apartment, this increases space and makes it brighter.

For a small apartment’s interior, use a combination of light shades that can be mixed with cool dark colors: black, gray, brown, dark green, and burgundy. Zone the room using furniture, different textures of finishes, and color.

For small spaces, choose functional compact furniture that does not clutter the space.

Art objects will help you infuse the aesthetic of a loft with creative atmosphere: sculptures, modern paintings, posters, and neon signs will be the highlight of your home.

Even More Interesting Solutions

The aesthetic of the loft style allows for various and interesting modern art objects.

Wooden shelves and racks are ideal for storing items.

Lamps on long cords perfectly complement the industrial style of the interior.

The kitchen corner should look like a workspace in a factory building: straight forms, an abundance of metal and chrome. Sliding doors in the style of barn doors will help save space in a small apartment.

Exterior wiring is sure to become a feature of your interior.

What to Buy for an Interior in Loft Style?

The main idea of the loft style is to fill the room with as much air and light as possible. We suggest using cold-toned finishing materials, rough wood, white ceiling paint, concrete, metal, plastic, stone, and glass in the interior.
