This page is also available in the following languages:🇷🇺🇺🇦🇫🇷🇩🇪🇪🇸🇵🇱🇨🇳

Space and comfort are the main requirements for a child's room. But how to achieve this if many city apartments don't have extra square meters?

The solution is children's two-story beds, which not only save space but also become part of the interior of the child's room.

Major Types of Two-Story Beds

These pieces of furniture have their classification, primarily related to the functional purpose of the items. Therefore, all two-story beds can be roughly divided into several categories.

For Two Children

This design provides a pair of full sleeping places with minimal use of room space. Usually, the older child sleeps upstairs, and the younger one downstairs. There are several types of such two-story beds:

  • standard or classic: one floor is positioned above another, with a ladder on the side;
  • offset to the left or right: here one bed is shifted relative to the other in some direction – this allows arranging a wardrobe, sideboard, or other furniture in the freed-up space;
  • perpendicular: the lower story is positioned at a 90-degree angle to the upper one – such a structure allows placing a desk or something else in the empty space.

For a Child and Parent

These structures are usually used in small living spaces. There are two variants of two-story beds:

  • the upper story is for the child, and the lower one serves as a sleeping place for an adult;
  • the upper part is a sleeping place for the parent, and the lower one is for the son or daughter (a safer option).

For Two Boys

What can be special here? It is worth considering thematic design: a two-story bed can be made in the form of a car, ship, or train, which will surely impress both future men. You can also choose a model with a slide or rope (sports style). But remember that such structures require considerable space.

For Girls

The design here is completely different, especially in terms of color choice. It should be soft: pastel shades are recommended. The structure itself can be decorated as a small house with windows on the sides. Inside the first story, you can hang pictures of girls on the wall. It is important that the structure fits into the overall interior design of the room (photos of a child's bedroom with a two-story bed can be seen on the website).

For Children of Different Genders

Often, the opinions of a girl and a boy about what their sleeping place should look like don't match. One possible design is beds placed perpendicularly. Therefore, each story can be decorated individually. You can mount a shelf with toys for the boy on the wall of the upper part and for the girl on the lower part. Bedding should be soft pink or beige if intended for a young lady, and bright (blue, green) if used by the future man.

For Children of Different Ages

This is also a complex variant. But here, at least, you can ask the older child to give way to the younger one. The type of two-story bed can be any: classic, offset to the side, or perpendicular. Usually, the older child sleeps on the upper story: he enjoys using the ladder (which can be built-in), while the younger one finds it dangerous. Also, consider spacious storage boxes for belongings. The best option is to buy a two-story bed with a small wardrobe.

For Teenagers

First, the purchase must be discussed with its occupant(s). There are several reasons why teenagers like two-story beds:

  • the possibility to experience a magical fairy tale of childhood again;
  • transforming the lower part into a comfortable sofa (in some models), where friends or girlfriends can sit.

Some models come with sideboards or wardrobes, which significantly saves the family budget. There are also beds sold with orthopedic mattresses, which is important for a teenager's developing spine. If there is only one user of the structure in the family, the optimal variant is to buy an item where the lower part is a desk with drawers. Such beds are often equipped with a small shelf for school supplies.

Loft Bed for One Child

This category of items is usually purchased by parents with small children's rooms. There are several variants:

  • The lower part of the structure is a workspace: desk, chair, shelves. A ladder leads upstairs, sometimes consisting of steps-boxes in which a child's things can be conveniently stored.

  • The bottom of the bed is a storage system. In this case, the lower "floor" is entirely dedicated to toys and other items stored in wardrobes and dressers.

  • A variant using the lower part of the structure to create a play zone or mini sports area.

Types of Two-Story Beds

The structures of these items can be very diverse: manufacturers have tried to consider everything, so the choice on the market of this type of furniture is quite extensive. What is offered?

  • Bed with Wardrobe

This design will attract interest from both boys and girls. Boys will happily store their costumes and various accessories in the wardrobe, while girls will store their outfits. There is another important function of this piece of furniture – maintaining order in a child's room, where scattered items are quite common. The wardrobe is usually placed near the end of the bed or sometimes under the upper story. There are also special models – two-story structures with corner wardrobes, which are convenient for small rooms.

  • Bed with Sofa

A very convenient variant for small living spaces. The lower part of the structure easily "transforms" into a sofa, and a ladder leads to the second story from its side. Manufacturers also offer models where the sofa transforms into a bed placed perpendicular to the upper bed, and on the freed-up right or left side – a table with shelves.

  • Beds with Play or Work Zones

In the first case, you will buy a real gift for your child: here the bed is located upstairs, and the lower part can be anything that a child likes: a platform with favorite toys on shelves or a house into which children like to climb to play games. A slide leads upstairs as an attraction. In the second case, a working desk and everything necessary for studying are located in the lower part.

  • Transformers

This type of furniture also belongs to two-story beds. There are several variants:

  • a structure where the lower story is pulled out from under the upper one: such furniture is suitable for toddlers aged under six;
  • models that can be transformed into a two-story bed with a pair of sleeping places. If desired, the lower part can be made into a sofa.

Styles

When choosing a bed, it is important to stick to the overall interior style of the room. The most common styles are:

  • Hightech. Characterized by functionality and rationality, strict geometry, and the use of two to three shades.

  • Romance. This style suits girls. Here are rounded elements, decoration, and soft pastel tones.

  • Eco. One of the most popular styles today. It implies the use of natural materials, ensuring ecological safety.

  • Minimalism. This is the absence of any unnecessary elements in the form of decoration and high functionality. Such a style suits teenagers better.

What Are Two-Story Beds Made Of

The manufacturing material can be very diverse, but its choice affects the durability of the item and the safety of use.

  • Solid Wood

The most preferred option, combining reliability, long service life, and ecological safety. The downside is the high cost. For making such structures, wood species like cherry, beech, oak, maple, and pine are used. The material undergoes additional processing:

  1. staining;
  2. waxing;
  3. whitewashing.

  • Plywood

This is a budget-friendly option and therefore the most popular. When purchasing, pay attention to the quality certificate where it should be stated that the item meets medical standards for formaldehyde content.

  • Steel

These are elegant, durable, and easy-to-assemble structures with a long operational life. They fit well into styles like hightech or minimalism. Trendy are items with silvered frames.

Safety Issues of Two-Story Beds

What should you pay attention to when purchasing such items? If not talking about the manufacturing material, which was discussed above, then first of all:

  • railings: they must be tall enough, strong, and extend around the entire perimeter;
  • ladder: steps should be wide and solid, and the structure itself should be stable; it is undesirable to use slippery metal;
  • fastening elements: bolts, clips, and other hardware should not protrude beyond the surface;
  • quality of assembly: shake the purchase in the store to determine its stiffness and strength.

Designing a Child's Room with a Two-Story Bed

When planning the interior (including color) in the room, consider the gender of the children. If they are girls, light shades are recommended. For boys, more "concrete" and not blurred colors are suitable. If the children are of different genders, you will have to find something in between: for example, beige tones. When buying a bed, consider the style of the room you've chosen: the structure and all other furniture items should match it. Photos of two-story beds in a child's bedroom can be seen here.

Sales of children's two-story beds have not only remained stable but have also increased over many years. This proves the practicality and convenience of this type of furniture, which is particularly relevant in modern urban apartments, most of which are not distinguished by large area.
