Scandinavian interiors, beloved by many, possess a special atmosphere where space is found for furniture of any style. How to create such an atmosphere – we show through the example of a Swedish two-room apartment

This small apartment with an area of 71 square meters is located in Ostermalm, the most prestigious and expensive district of Stockholm. Although living rooms and kitchen are small, the apartment space is filled with light and air.

In part, this is due to a successful layout principle, where the corridor, wardrobe, and bathroom are located in the center of the apartment, where less natural daylight enters, while the light is concentrated in the living room, bedroom, and kitchen with dining area.

There was also a small reconfiguration. To make the dining area visually more spacious and the corridor brighter, the wall between the kitchen and the corridor was removed.

Several storage areas were organized in the apartment: a mirrored wardrobe and a drawer under the bed in the bedroom, a block of two wardrobes in the corridor, and a small open shelving system with shelves and hangers in the niche by the entrance.

When there is enough natural light in the room, any colors can be confidently included in the main interior palette, even the darkest ones. However, the walls of the apartment are kept in a white-gray tone: to harmonize many items of different stylistic directions and eras collected in the interior, a light, weightless background is needed.

And thanks to neutral walls, the restrained 'Roman' chairs in the dining area harmonize well with industrial ceiling lights, and the wire chandelier – a reference to the romantic era – seems not to contradict the modern sofa and armchair in the living room.

Perhaps, the main reason is not only in the walls. Furniture and decor with softly worn surfaces, soft rugs with a faded effect, rustic mirrors, and even roughly finished flower pots – items with a vintage look make the interior cozy and relaxed, softening contrasts between objects of different styles and eras.
