Rakin Tower: Sustainable Transformation by Maud Caubet Architectes
Rakin Tower is an example of sustainable innovation and adaptive design in Paris. This project by Maud Caubet Architectes revitalizes the former headquarters of ONF, transforming it into a modern eco-friendly architectural landmark.
Located in the vibrant 12th arrondissement of Paris, Rakin Tower stands as a testament to sustainable innovation and adaptive design. Under the direction of Maud Caubet Architectes for Alderan (SCI EWOK), this outstanding project breathes new life into the former headquarters of the National Forest Office (ONF). Completed in November 2024, the transformation of this 35-meter tower demonstrates how urban architecture can evolve while preserving its past.
Reviving Brutalist Heritage with Modern Charm
Originally designed in the 1970s, the tower reflects the era of brutalism with its blocky structure and artificial lower level. The reimagining of Rakin Tower revisits these outdated features by introducing curved extensions and terraced areas that harmonize with the natural landscape. A green roof transforms the structure, reconnecting it to nature and addressing urban density challenges.
The project also transformed two parking levels into vibrant spaces filled with natural light and created a 12-meter curved terrace patio opening onto a rooftop garden. This innovative approach reclaimed valuable square meters, blending functionality with a new sense of openness.
Flexible Structure for Future Adaptability
The modular design of Rakin Tower ensures future versatility. Its mesh structure and strategically placed vertical transport system allow easy transitions from offices to housing, co-living spaces, or even hotel rooms.
Double-height ceilings and a bioclimatic greenhouse enhance the building's practicality, supporting its adaptation to changing tenant needs. Whether for work, rest, or community events, Rakin Tower offers a dynamic environment for living, learning, and growth.
The Crown: A Greenhouse
Replacing the former attic on the tenth floor, a wooden glass crown houses a bioclimatic greenhouse and an educational urban agromuseum. This space includes a café accessible to all building users, offering stunning views of Paris. At night, the crown glows like a beacon, becoming a visual landmark for the community.
Sustainability at Its Core
Rakin Tower's commitment to sustainability is evident in every aspect of its design. The project earned the HQE Excellent certification, Effinergie+ standards, and the BiodiverCity label. Its materials—wood, glass, and plants—represent ecological responsibility while maintaining aesthetic harmony.
Created by Maud Caubet Architectes, renowned for enhancing existing structures, this project showcases conscious reimagining. The firm's approach respects the building’s original character while integrating modern elements that prioritize ecological management and community well-being.
