Lindsey House by Megowan Architectural: A Fusion of Art Deco and Modern Design

Redefining Residential Heritage

Located in Mackinnon, Melbourne, the Lindsey House designed by architects from Megowan Architectural demonstrates how residential architecture can honor traditions while embracing modernity. Completed in 2023, this 2863 square foot home draws inspiration from Art Deco, Scandinavian, and Post-Soviet Modern styles, transforming a modest brick structure into a richly layered contemporary living space.

The primary design objective was to strengthen the connection between the existing upper level of the house and the lower rear courtyard. The solution—a buried living room—created both a physical and visual transition, expanding the space and opening up interior views of the garden.

Source of Inspiration and Influence

The design language is rooted in Art Deco references, extended to the back facade of the house to maintain a link between old and new. These elements are combined with Scandinavian simplicity and the warmth of Post-Soviet era, evident in window systems with headboard arrangements, elongated light fixtures, light oak finishes, and visible wooden trusses. Together, these elements form a balanced composition of elegance, functionality, and comfort.

Materials and Textures

Brick, already present on the site, served as both a material and thematic foundation. Its presence influenced the use of red marble surfaces, boldly colored metal accents and finishes, adding richness and continuity to the spaces. These darker tones contrast with light oak veneers, oiled wooden trusses and light flooring, creating a balanced texture palette.

The interplay of bold and soft elements defines the interiors:

• Bold accents: chosen instead of deep blue as a vibrant thematic statement.

• Bathroom details: burgundy tiles, seats and finishes echo traditional window sills and cornice elements of the original house.

• Details and finishes: meticulously crafted to create rhythm and depth in functional zones.

Dialogue with Clients

Working previously with homeowners, the architects were entrusted to push design boundaries. The two presented color accents—deep blue and cardinal red—prompted clients to choose the more daring cardinal tone, establishing a unique visual identity for the house. This collaboration enriched the renovation with a sense of continuity, trust and bold creativity.

The Lindsey House presents a carefully reimagined version of Melbourne's suburban fabric. By combining Art Deco geometric forms, the clarity of Scandinavian architecture and warmth of Post-Soviet era into a unified narrative, Megowan Architectural achieved a home that is both timeless and contemporary.

Sensitive integration of existing and new volumes, bold use of contrasting materials, and seamless indoor-outdoor transitions make the Lindsey House a testament to the firm's ability to transform traditions into vibrant modern life.
