BLG French Restaurant by Tanzo Space Design — A Landmark Dining Spot in Qinhuangdao
A Landmark Dining Experience
More than just a dining space, BLG French Restaurant on Haibi Terrace has become a cultural landmark on Qinhuangdao's coast. Created by Tanzo Space Design, this 5812-square-foot project redefines the role of restaurants in urban renewal.
By combining architecture, gastronomy, and lifestyle, BLG achieves what many establishments cannot: people are drawn not only to the restaurant's dishes but also to the idea of living nearby. It has become a social hub and destination, forming the foundation of Haibi Terrace as one of the most sought-after coastal districts in the city.
Context: Haibi Terrace and Urban Renewal
Haibi Terrace, designed by Moshe Safdie, is a premium residential complex featuring terraces, sky bridges, and connected gardens. Although initially intended as real estate, its success is evidenced by the inclusion of cultural and hospitable venues such as BLG.
The restaurant is more than just a tenant—it's the driving force of community life, attracting local elites, business communities, and tourists. Its influence extends beyond cuisine, engaging real estate and cultural identity.
Design Concept: The Arc by the Shore
Tanzo Space Design presents the restaurant as an “arc” within the existing grey structure, inserting a cylindrical volume with long window strips. This strategy of “architecture within architecture” creates contrast, symbolizing shelter, renewal, and continuity.
The interior is perceived as a sanctuary—its curved surfaces resemble a ship formed by waves, with spaces alternating between intimate privacy and openness to the sea. The result is a poetic balance of imagination and materiality, where visitors feel grounded yet transformed.
Spacial Experience
First Floor — Bar and Social Area
Visitors enter through a narrow wooden door into a black-and-white corridor leading to the bar. Large glass panels blur the boundaries with Bohai Bay. During the day, the sea and sand become part of the space; at night, lighting transforms the room into a glowing stage.
The semi-parametric design evokes textures of sand and waves, while curved bars resemble floating islands in the sea made of stone and light.
Second Floor — Dining Hall with Sea View
Ascending a dimly lit staircase, guests emerge into a bright dining hall where Chef Peter, known for his dishes from southern France, leads an open kitchen. Copper cookware, handcrafted black brick, and mediterranean oysters set the tone for a cuisine surrounded by architecture.
Beige textile ceilings, Spanish stone floors, and smoky pink glass reflect light like wine and sunset. Folding doors open to terraces that connect the interior with coastal panoramas.
Atmosphere and Community
BLG French Restaurant is more than just a commercial venue, but a public cultural space. Its design allows flexible use of the area—ideal for quiet dinners, lively gatherings, or immersing in the nightlife rhythm. The architecture supports Qinhuangdao’s coastal lifestyle while maintaining timeless elegance.
Since its opening, BLG has remained vibrant, demonstrating how design, gastronomy, and community values can ensure long-term relevance in the hospitality industry.
The BLG French Restaurant, created by Tanzo Space Design, shows how a project can exceed its function, becoming both a destination and cultural anchor. By combining French cuisine, architectural innovation, and Qinhuangdao's coastal setting, BLG sets a new standard for hospitality and urban renewal in China.
