10 Small Things That Ruin Any Interior

Things You Should Throw Away Immediately

We've already talked about which items can ruin an interior. Let's continue the topic, but now we're sharing tips from Western designers.

Inappropriate Materials in Finishing

For example, cheap paint on the wall is noticeable immediately: it doesn't apply well and peels off quickly, making the interior look untidy. It's better to spend more and choose high-quality and safe materials that will last long.

PinterestPinterestToo Large or Too Small Furniture

If furniture is disproportionate to the room, the interior appears cluttered or, on the contrary, unfinished. Before filling the space with furniture items, measure it.

Designers recommend leaving about one meter of free space between furniture items when possible. You can mark their placement on the floor to understand if you have enough room.

PinterestPinterestCheap Fabric Upholstery

Furniture with fabric made from a mix of natural and synthetic fibers—cotton and polyester—is affordable. However, even though it's not entirely synthetic, the fabric still pills and looks untidy.

The problem can be solved using a special shaver with a blade that trims the pills. But it's better to choose natural fabrics like linen, cotton, wool, or jute.

PinterestPinterestCheap Hardware

Even the cheapest furniture can look elegant — all you need is to replace the hardware. The same applies to door handles and towel hooks. Don't use plastic hooks and other accessories — they make the interior look cheaper than it actually is.

PinterestPinterestSmall Rugs

Often, a rug is disproportionate to the space. Designers recommend choosing a rug that covers the entire seating area. The sofa should be fully on the rug or standing on it with its front legs.

PinterestPinterestPlastic Molding

Small plastic moldings, cut at 45 degrees, ruin even a luxurious renovation. Choose polyurethane, MDF, wooden, or metal flat tall moldings: they add graphic appeal. Additionally, polyurethane moldings can be painted in wall color — this visually increases ceiling height.

PinterestPinterestVertical Blinds

Horizontal blinds are much better — they can be custom-made. Alternatively, replace blinds with sliding screens or shutters. An interesting idea is to hang a projector screen over the window. It's convenient for watching movies and no need to think of how to close the windows.

PinterestPinterestThresholds

Instead of overlaying thresholds at joints of floor coverings, use metal profiles, cork compensators, or sealant. These make the transition less visually sharp and prevent tripping while moving around the apartment.

PinterestPinterestShort Curtains

Even if you don’t have the option to order custom curtains, they must perfectly suit your interior. It’s good if the fabric is just a few centimeters short of touching the floor. Measure the distance from the floor to the ceiling in advance.

If curtains of the right length aren’t available in the store, choose longer ones — they can always be shortened.

PinterestPinterestPoor Lighting

The optimal choice for an apartment is light bulbs with a color temperature of 2700K, which provide moderate warm light.

If the house is dark, add additional lighting sources: wall sconces and lamps not only won’t clutter the space but also add warmth to it.
