Idea + Collages

Marina — a mother of a 1.5-year-old girl — approached us with a request to redesign the guest bedroom into a children's room. The only condition she set was not to change the wall and floor finishes.

The children's room had to fit into the classic-style home interior and compensate for the lack of natural light in the room. We developed several collages, but ultimately chose a variant with floral patterns on the wall.

We also developed several furniture arrangements: with a children's bed and extra space.

Finishing

The most challenging part was integrating dark brown doors and Venetian plaster on the walls: the child's father strictly refused to change them. After our discussion, he allowed experimenting with one wall, which became the starting point for developing the entire room concept.

Furniture and Decor

Some items were ordered from our online store, others were custom-made. First, we focused on storage spaces for books and toys. For this purpose, a sideboard and a shelf with a sliding drawer were made according to my sketch.

To integrate the existing dresser into the new interior, we invited artists. It was painted on-site. We also remade the child's hammock and adapted it to the setting. Curtains and decorative cushions were sewn on order.

Project Implementation and Cost

It took about 3.5 months from approving the design concept to its implementation. Fortunately, we had immediate mutual understanding with the client: Marina actively participated in the project, even though she was abroad during its execution.

The designer's visit to the site for consultation and measurements cost 5,000 rubles. Then we made a layout with furniture placement and several collage options. This work cost 15,000 rubles. Finally, we compiled a specification for furniture, lighting, and additional works. The average check for furniture, decor, and accessories was 500,000 rubles.

Tips for Decorating a Children's Room

Determine Which Functional Zones You Need

A children's room will be relevant for a child up to 3–4 years old if you plan a creativity zone and provide enough storage for books and toys. The sleeping area in modern bed models easily transforms from a crib to a bed without rails.

When the child turns 5–6, the interior can still be relevant if you replace the bed and set up a small desk.

Plan the Color Palette

Soft pastel tones are perfect for a children's room: warm mint, dusty pink, vanilla ice cream color, and cloudy blue. Over time, it will be easy to change furniture items in such an environment, and the room will remain functional until school age.

Create an Accent Wall

You can paint it with drawing or chalk paints, or cover it with printed wallpaper.

Place a Children's Tent or Hammock

This will diversify the interior and give the child their own play corner.
