How Can a Large Family Fit in a Tiny House?
John and Julie Baker, with two children, went to their country home for a short spring vacation but ended up isolated there for six months. See how they found space for everyone
In March of this year, John and Julie Baker, along with their school-aged children, planned a two-week vacation at their countryside home near Toronto. However, due to the pandemic, they stayed there for six months.
There were few separate rooms in the house, and remote learning and online work meetings took place simultaneously. After a month, the couple realized they needed a separate room on wheels close to the house.
When the pandemic started, we were in isolation, baking, gardening, and riding bikes. But then the kids started school, and we had work to do. There wasn't enough space.
The idea for a mobile room came from the image of a shepherd's hut. These huts were used in Britain during lambing season.
The family was especially inspired by Thomas Hardy's novel "Far from the Madding Crowd," where one of the main characters owned a farm in rural North England.
We dreamed of escaping reality, of a room where everyone could spend time alone with themselves.

To make such a structure not only beautiful but also mobile, John combined the romantic image of a hut with the practical mechanism of a buggy (a light off-road vehicle).

It took the family four months to bring the idea to life. In April, John approached the local sawmill owner who builds chicken coops and gazebos throughout the area. By July, everything was ready.

The exterior of the structure reflects traditional British aesthetics. For example, the facade is made from blackened pine, which has long been used in England for fisherman's huts.

The beauty of the interior lies in its details: an old wood-burning stove stands at the entrance, and vintage decor includes a basket for collecting eggs, brass utensils, and an old typewriter.

Now, John and Julie use the additional space for video calls at work, while the children come here to draw.
