People usually start thinking about replacing a window seal when autumn cold sets in, and the apartment becomes uncomfortable due to constant drafts, annoying dust, and distracting outdoor noise. Unfortunately, window seals tend to age, dry out, and lose elasticity. You can call professionals, whose services are quite expensive, and the problem will be solved within a few hours. Alternatively, you can replace the window seal yourself, following our tips and recommendations.

When to Replace a Window Seal

The seal is a crucial component in ensuring the airtightness of plastic windows. Its condition determines how well the window functions—whether it provides effective sound insulation and heat retention or not. High-quality rubber seals give modern plastic windows excellent airtightness, far surpassing that of older window designs. With a new rubber seal, drafts and freezing winter winds are no longer a concern. You no longer need to insulate window frames in autumn or worry about staying warm while sitting at your computer.

Typically, manufacturers of high-quality German seals offer a warranty of 10 to 15 years, depending on regional climate conditions. Less durable Asian or Turkish products usually last no more than 5 years, and often even less than the manufacturer’s stated warranty period.

It’s worth noting that improper use can drastically shorten the lifespan of most window seals. If the material loses its elasticity, it must be replaced. Cracks appearing on the seal are also a clear signal to replace it. To minimize such signals, consider several factors affecting the seal’s lifespan in PVC window profiles:

  • average annual temperature,
  • proper window maintenance,
  • frequency of freezing and thawing cycles,
  • temperature fluctuations inside and outside the room,
  • indoor and outdoor humidity levels,
  • incorrect window sash adjustment,
  • care and maintenance of the window seal.

Rubber Seal: How to Extend Its Lifespan – Care Tips

Is it possible to extend the seal’s lifespan? Yes, it’s simple! While it’s impossible to preserve it forever, extending its service life by 2–3 times is entirely within reach. It is recommended to treat the seal with a silicone-based lubricant, as advised by the manufacturer, a few times a year.

Here’s how to do it:

  • First, clean the window seal with a damp cloth to remove dirt and dust.
  • Apply a small amount of the liquid to an absorbent cloth, and using the damp side, wipe the seal.
  • Repeat the process until the material is fully saturated.

You may also use technical vaseline or purchase a window care kit. The kit costs around 200–300 rubles and typically lasts several years. After application, the seal becomes more flexible and water-repellent.

How to Replace the Seal

You’ve decided not to call a professional and replace the window seal yourself? With the right tools and materials, this task won’t take much time or effort. You’ll need:

  • scissors,
  • pliers,
  • hammer,
  • chisel,
  • awl,
  • adhesive.

Begin the Replacement:

  • Use the awl to remove the decorative covers from the top hinge.
  • Remove the pin from the hinge. Disconnect the sash from the frame, gently tapping the pin downward with a hammer. Pull the pin out with pliers until the hinges separate.
  • Remove the sash from the lower pin by lifting it upward.
  • Take out the old seal from the groove. Wipe the seal groove clean with a dry, clean cloth. Insert the new seal by hand, exactly as it was positioned before. Note: Do not stretch the rubber — this is a common mistake!
  • Remove any leftover wood glue from the seal joints and reapply adhesive where needed. Repeat the process on the frame side of the window profile.
  • Reinstall the window sash in place. The replacement is now complete.

As you can see, this is a straightforward process. After finishing, your home will once again be warm and cozy.
