Roofing is one of the most critical elements in construction, along with the foundation and walls. It serves a protective function against atmospheric exposure (rain and melting snow) and ensures thermal insulation (retains heat and protects from overheating). The modern construction market offers a wide variety of roofing materials, but the final choice remains with the builder.

Often, people focus on budget, but remember: 'penny wise, pound foolish.' Saving on roofing materials and qualified installers can result in leaks after the first rain. In the end — additional stress, money, and time wasted.

Despite the variety, metal tile roofing has been the most popular and in-demand roofing material in Russia in recent years. Metal tiles are made from galvanized, profiled steel sheets with a polymer coating. They are manufactured from special thin steel sheets, with a thickness of 0.4–0.5 mm. The galvanization and polymer coating on both sides protect the metal from corrosion. The service life of the roof depends on the thickness of the zinc layer.

Types of polymer coatings for metal tiles

Polymer coatings for metal tiles come in several types:

  • Aluzinc – a coating made from aluminum, zinc, and silicon.
  • Polyester. Made from polyester paint, available in matte and glossy finishes, imitates natural ceramic tiles.
  • PrinTech. A combination of aluzinc and polyester. The surface of these tiles mimics natural materials like stone and wood.
  • Puran. Based on polyurethane. Metal tiles with this coating have the longest service life.
  • Plastisol. Made from plasticizers and polyvinyl chloride, offers the highest resistance to mechanical damage and corrosion.
  • PVDF. A coating made from acrylic and polyvinyl fluoride.

Advantages and disadvantages of metal tile roofing

There are many advantages to metal tile roofing.

  • Universality. Can be used independently or over an existing base.
  • Installation. Can be installed by a homeowner after a brief tutorial from a qualified specialist. Sheets are easy to lay and fasten with roofing screws.
  • Price. Metal tiles are competitively priced, offering strong value compared to other roofing materials.
  • Service life. Typical warranty is 15 years; actual service life ranges from 30 to 50 years.
  • Appearance. Thanks to a wide color palette and various textures, it fits seamlessly into any architectural design.
  • Environmentally safe and completely non-toxic.
  • Excellent resistance to extreme temperature changes.

The only drawback is high sound conductivity. Without additional sound insulation, you will hear raindrops or footsteps of birds walking on the roof.

Transport and installation of metal tiles

Deformation of the profile often occurs during transport and handling due to improper handling. Always carry sheets in pairs, holding them perpendicular to the ground. Never drag them along the surface.

Before unloading from the vehicle, prepare a flat, stable surface for storage. Transport metal tiles to the roof with care — otherwise, sheets may warp and become difficult to install.

Use of a roof sheathing (lathing) is mandatory when installing metal tiles! Some professionals skip this step. Insist on proper installation procedures.

Do not use a grinder to cut the material! The polymer coating gets damaged at cut points, and wood shavings may stick. Use electric shears instead.
