Not long ago, we used to buy furniture in sets and hang curtains on windows. But how is it now?

Designer Olesya Paramonova talks about rules that were once indispensable for any interior—now designers not only allow but also recommend breaking them.

In the past, furniture was bought as sets—this is no longer necessary. It's better to diversify the interior with a bright, design-focused armchair. It can be of a different style or color but should have some support in the overall interior.

The bed, nightstands, and dresser do not have to match in design. Nightstands can differ—alternatively, you might even do without them and use bedside tables instead. Furniture designers increasingly offer beds with soft headboards sold separately and not completed by anything else.

The same principle applies to dining sets. Chairs don’t need to come from the same set as the table. Designers boldly mix furniture of different colors and styles.

It's not always necessary to get rid of them, but in many cases, you can do without them. In small rooms with large window sills, removing curtains can expand the space.

It's better to ignore this rule—this way you will be in line with current trends. Doors can become an accent or harmonize well with the entire interior but should not match the floor color.

Designers have moved away from the familiar ceramic tiles—now they use tiles that imitate stone, concrete, or wood.

Such techniques have gone into the past. Sometimes, due to technical reasons, ceilings need to be lowered—so multi-level designs are still used but in more direct and minimalist lines.

These were used in pure form for kitchen cabinets, ceilings, and bathroom walls. Today, more complex tones are in demand: dusty pastels or deep dark colors.

Massive armrests and backrests of sofas have given way to minimalist forms and more modest dimensions. At recent exhibitions, designers even favored frame furniture.

They’ve also simplified in form: instead of semi-circular arches, rectangular openings are now preferred.
