Blue Color and Vintage Furniture: With a Swedish Blogger
To make your home a place you want to return to again and again, fill it with meaningful items and things close to your heart. Or take your favorite color as a starting point – just like the owner of this Swedish cottage did.
The house in Värberg on the western coast of Sweden was purchased by Kristin Lagerkvist and her husband several years ago. When the couple started decorating the interior, they didn’t need to hire professionals right away, as Kristin is not only a wife and mother of three sons, but also a designer, photographer, and blogger.

They also didn’t spend much time choosing the color palette: blue is the main color in Kristin's life, and her family has long embraced this love as well. However, choosing the dominant tone for the interior is only half the battle. It was important to properly balance this not necessarily cozy or homey color, and plan appropriate materials and textures for it.

Rooms where Kristin’s photos and graphics were planned to be displayed were painted with Belgian paint in rich blue shades; even in the lightest room—the dining room, where most of the pictures are concentrated—walls were pale blue. There was also a noble, aged wooden sideboard in a creamy color—vintage is loved in the house, and it creates a sense of peace and comfort. This feeling is also enhanced by an abundance of textured textiles in the living room, children’s room, and bedroom. Pillows and rugs are handwoven—produced by a Swedish brand using techniques of Indian weaving.

There is no blue anywhere in some areas. The strict, neoclassical kitchen is white, wooden furniture, a golden chandelier, and Morris & Co wallpaper in a greenish shade—this gives the eye rest from the dynamic color scheme of the home interior.

Many attention was paid to decoration: woven boxes, plants in pots with vibrant hues, travel souvenirs, and eclectic lighting fixtures. There was also something else Kristin couldn’t help but add to her interior. Birds—Kristin’s totem. They are a recurring motif everywhere: in the subjects of paintings, in home clothes, on cushion covers; birds, more precisely cranes, "dance" in the wallpaper Engblad & Co on the walls of one of the rooms. This highly personalized interior is a great example of how if your home is exactly as you want it to be, styles, rules, and trends don’t matter so much.
