Choosing Flooring for the Bathroom
The bathroom is one of the most frequently used rooms in an apartment. The indoor environment here is quite aggressive, as humid air and steam are present almost all the time. That's why the choice of bathroom flooring should be based on more than just desired interior style and personal preferences.
Ceramic Tile
This is the most common choice for bathroom flooring. The main difference between floor tiles and wall tiles lies in the more textured surface of the former. This ensures you can walk on it safely with wet feet, minimizing the risk of slipping and falling. Average thickness of floor ceramic tiles ranges from 1.3 to 2 centimeters, with sizes typically between 10 and 60 centimeters. Besides the classic square shape, a wide variety of forms are available (rectangular, hexagonal, octagonal, etc.). Mosaic tiles are especially popular, allowing for truly stunning patterns and designs. Additionally, they are very easy to install.
When choosing flooring for your bathroom, remember: if you decide on ceramic tiles, pay attention to their porosity level. This is crucial, as tiles will be installed in a high-moisture environment and must be highly water-resistant. Depending on porosity, tiles are classified as non-porous, glazed, partially glazed, or unglazed—best choice for bathrooms is non-porous or fully glazed.
Carpet Tile (Carpets)
Many mistakenly believe carpet is not ideal for bathroom flooring. However, with careful consideration, several suitable options exist. The carpet must resist mold, have water- and stain-repellent properties, and include a moisture-blocking underlay. Such a solution is worth the time spent finding it, as it's not only soft and warm but also pleasant to walk on barefoot.
Laminate
Laminate flooring is made from resins, wood fibers, and kraft paper, bonded together to create a durable, long-lasting, and practical surface that is also easy to clean and looks highly realistic. Thus, laminate can be an excellent choice for bathroom flooring, especially since today there’s a full range of waterproof and moisture-resistant laminate options specifically designed for bathrooms.
Wood
Wooden floors are timeless and elegant. Choosing wooden flooring for your bathroom ensures a warm, cozy atmosphere. In fact, wood can withstand bathroom conditions if properly treated with a special water-repellent coating.
Natural Stone
Natural stone is an excellent choice for bathroom flooring. It’s low-maintenance and long-lasting. However, like ceramic tiles, it’s cold underfoot and not ideal for walking barefoot. Also, wet surfaces increase slipping risks. For a safer, non-slip alternative, consider polished or textured stone.
