Using a mirror can improve the atmosphere in your home, boost self-esteem, and double happiness. The key is to find the right place for it in your home.

In Feng Shui, not only the placement of a mirror but also its shape matters: it is believed that incorrect selection and use of mirrors in interior design can negatively affect the atmosphere in your home, the quality of sleep, and even your self-esteem. Today, together with Irina Simakova, we explain how to understand which mirror to buy and where to hang it afterward.

Irina Simakova, Expert
Consultant of the Association of Feng Shui in Great Britain and Europe (FSS) and the International Feng Shui Forum (MFFSH). She believes that a home is a mirror reflection of a person's life. Everyone can change their life by transforming the space around them.

1. Chaos Out

A mirror's surface belongs to the water element. It brings light, cleanliness, and tranquility into an interior. If you feel that your home has a chaotic or restless atmosphere, make sure to have mirrors in the northern, eastern, and southeast areas of your apartment.

2. Clear Reflection

Your reflection in a mirror literally reflects your image and shapes how you feel about yourself. That is why it's essential that the mirror is clean, without aging effects, cracking, or other decorative elements that might distort or split your reflection.

3. Mirror in the Foyer

For the foyer, choose a full-length mirror — one that allows every member of your family to see themselves completely in it. The best spot for a mirror is next to the front door, but never directly opposite it. The logic is simple: otherwise, the energy entering your home will be repelled.

4. Decorative Mirrors

Small and narrow decorative mirrors, as well as mirrors made from small fragments or irregular shapes, literally cut off parts of your face. If you often look into such mirrors, your inner harmony may be disrupted — a balance imbalance will start accumulating at the subconscious level. Therefore, place decorative mirrors so that they reflect only light, not people.

5. Double What's Good – Always a Good Idea

In Feng Shui, mirrors are often used to enhance desired aspects of life. A mirror literally and symbolically doubles everything reflected in it. Use mirrors to enhance the energy of what brings you joy: a beautiful view from a window, a favorite art object, flowers...

Conversely, make sure that unpleasant items or broken things are not reflected in the mirror. In good Feng Shui, we aim to neutralize and remove sources of negative energy.

6. Restful Sleep Without Mirrors

Do you have trouble sleeping? Check if you're reflecting in a mirror while sleeping. Light and movement reflected in mirrors can create unnecessary tension at the moment when you're in a relaxed state. If moving the mirror isn't possible, easily fix the situation by covering it at night.

7. Better Fewer Than More

The golden rule for placing mirrors is no more than one large mirror per wall. Since mirrors reflect things that don't actually exist in the space, too many mirrors can disorient and bring chaos to your environment.

Also, avoid placing mirrors directly opposite each other. Otherwise, you risk creating a 'mirror corridor' and overly active, draining energy in your home.
