Ceiling Decoration with Vagonka
But materials used in each technology vary depending on the type of cladding. Even options for ceiling decoration with vagonka can be very diverse and radically differ from one another.
Vagonka refers to a profiled building material with a tongue-and-groove joint system. When joined, the vagonka forms a solid panel that appears monolithic but is actually assembled from individual elements. The type of elements used determines whether complex designs are possible or if a classic straight ceiling is better.
Types of Vagonka
Most vagonka is made from the following materials: natural wood, plastic, and MDF. The most well-known and traditional type is wooden vagonka. Any type of wood can be used, but pine and birch vagonka are most widely used.
Pine vagonka is used in finishing various indoor spaces, including ceilings in homes and apartments, as well as in unheated structures. The choice depends on the room type, with different grades, sizes, and thicknesses available.
Birch vagonka is often used in high-temperature areas such as saunas, steam rooms, and baths. This is due to the absence of resin in the wood structure, which prevents staining and soiling.
Vagonka also varies by grade, width, tongue-and-groove pattern, and manufacturing process.
Plastic vagonka comes in two main types: seamless and with a visible joint. The vagonka with a visible joint resembles wooden vagonka in shape but differs in color range. While wooden vagonka often needs additional finishing, plastic vagonka can be selected in the desired color immediately, including imitation of natural wood texture.
Seamless plastic vagonka features a hidden tongue-and-groove system, so the joint becomes nearly invisible after installation. This type is much wider than standard vagonka—sometimes up to five times wider—reducing the number of visible joints on the ceiling.
MDF panels, known as vagonka made from fiberboard, are produced by pressing wood fibers into flat sheets 3–5 mm thick, with a tongue-and-groove fastening system. Their shape and dimensions are standardized, but the color options are virtually unlimited.
When choosing MDF vagonka for ceilings, be cautious—this material is sensitive to excess moisture. Deformation caused by wetting and drying may lead to complete panel collapse or inability to align. In dry rooms, MDF vagonka can be safely used.
Ceiling Structure and Vagonka Installation
Before installing the framework, decide in which direction the vagonka will be attached. If along the room, install the framework perpendicularly, and vice versa.
Generally, framework members must run perpendicular to the vagonka, especially for complex-shaped ceilings. A complex shape means dividing the ceiling into sections with changing vagonka direction, allowing for zone separation or creating a visually striking, unique ceiling.
To enhance the joint line when using any vagonka type, use either cover moldings or joint strips.
Framework installation begins with leveling using any convenient tool: a builder’s level, laser level, or water level. If the floor is already level, use it as a reference—measure and mark equal distances from the floor.
Next, install the outermost guide rails. Drill holes in the rail equal to the diameter of the anchors. Position the rail (section size from 30x30 mm to 50x50 mm) against the wall at the marked level points and drill through it into the wall. For wooden walls, drill to match the screw thickness.
If the room includes a joint or geometric feature, install joint guide rails next. Fasten them to the ceiling using screws or anchor nails, adjusting them along strings with shims. For large drops from the base ceiling, install hangers first, then the joint rail.
Then divide the remaining space into equal parts so that the distance between centers of adjacent rails is 35–45 cm. Install and secure all remaining rails using the same method as for joint rails.
When finishing with wooden vagonka or MDF panels, attach the rails first. Align joints to walls and each other, then cover wall joints with baseboards and joint gaps with cover moldings. For MDF, a universal corner profile serves as both baseboard and cover molding—can be installed straight (inside), turned inward (as baseboard), or outward (as corner strip).
When using plastic vagonka or panels, the process changes: install baseboards around the room perimeter first, then joint strips (also known as cover moldings), and only after that align and secure the panels.
Attach plastic vagonka to the rails using a stapler or screws. Fix wooden vagonka with nails into the groove or with small-head screws, using pre-drilling. MDF is best secured with short nails with large heads.
