Even if you don't know it by name, you probably picture what a letter board is. It's a miniature version of the classic sign used by cafes, bars, bakeries and various commercial establishments to display menus of products and services. The concept is simple: a perforated board with a set of letters that can be inserted into holes to form words and even full sentences.

Although they were often associated with commercial spaces in the past, letter boards work perfectly for residential projects as well, since they add a lot of personality to them. You can write motivational phrases, inspiring quotes or important notices for residents. But the truth is there are no rules when using a letter board in decoration. You can even use it to create pictures from different letters and words (in the style of concrete poetry).

If you're looking for inspiration on what to write and where to use a letter board in your home interior, read this article! We'll show you how to make a letter board at home and how to use it in decoration.

How to Make a Letter Board: Step-by-Step

At first glance, it might seem impossible, but making a letter board from scratch at home is very easy and inexpensive.

Here's the list of materials:

  • Frame in the shape of a box
  • Felt
  • Wooden barbecue skewers
  • Office glue
  • Scissors
  • Pen
  • Additional set of letters for signage

Important: Wooden sticks must be the size compatible with the width of the chosen frame, otherwise the instructions won't work.

  • Start by disassembling the frame.
  • Use the bottom part of the frame as a template for stick size. Place them horizontally, align one edge with the back panel and mark the other end. Then use scissors to trim excess skewers according to the mark.
  • Repeat this process as needed to cover the entire bottom part of the frame with skewers (always horizontal).
  • Place a skewer on felt and mark the length of the felt. Also mark sides of the skewer on the felt, leaving a margin to fully cover the entire skewer.
  • Cut felt according to marks and use this first piece as a template for others. You'll need enough of these pieces to wrap all the skewers used.
  • Take the first piece of felt and apply a line of glue in the center and another at one end. Insert the skewer into the center and close one end with the other. Repeat this process with all sticks.
  • Take the frame and insert felt skewers from one end to another. The layer of sticks should be tight but not too tight, otherwise you won't be able to insert letters.
  • When all holes are filled, glue the back panel to the frame and close it.
  • Now just use the letters to write what you need!
