Klenovy Bulvar Station by Osetskaya Salov: Modern Metro Inspired by Russian Heritage

Context and Cultural Environment
The Klenovy Bulvar station, designed by Osetskaya Salov, is located near the Museum-Reserve of Kolomenskoye in Moscow, where unchanged landscapes and unique Russian architecture are cherished. The museum complex, including wooden churches and the majestic Palace of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich, serves as a rich source of cultural references for the project. The design draws inspiration from the historical surroundings, translating it into a modern architectural lexicon.
Overground Pavilion
The entrance pavilion represents a bright combination of modernity and traditions. Its soft, dome-like silhouettes reinterpret the architectural motifs of Kolomenskoye, while engraved metal panels directly reference Dyak culture and reticulated ceramic artifacts, traditions rooted in this region. Point lighting on the facade creates a sense of lightness, smoothly transitioning into the ceiling covering of the underground lobby.
By day, the pavilion looks refined and modest; at night, its roof perimeter with lighting transforms the building into a glowing point of modern infrastructure. The layered lighting system inside uses vertical illumination to accentuate wall textures, large illuminated panels at the entrance, and mirror ceiling panels reflecting daylight and artificial lighting to create a dynamic visual effect.
Interior Architecture
Inside the station, a monochromatic palette of marble, granite and aluminum emphasizes purity and elegance. The design reinterprets the traditional Russian dome, using a vaulted ceiling above the platforms. Skillfully, only half of the dome is physically constructed — the other half is reflected in mirror panels on the walls, creating a unified silhouette through reflection.
The interplay between real and virtual elements enhances the symbolic and spiritual qualities of Russian architectural heritage, creating a calm and monumental atmosphere within platform spaces.
Materials and Finishing
Walls and Arches: White Russian marble and aluminum panels
Floors and Lower Walls: Black and gray Russian granite
Columns and Supports: Black aluminum and mirror panels
Ceilings: White aluminum dome panels with hidden lighting
The material palette reinforces the sense of clarity, clean texture and timelessness, while also providing durability for high passenger usage.
Dialogue Between Past and Present
Klenovy Bulvar Station is more than just a functional transit hub. It's a modern cultural monument. Combining references to wooden and stone monuments of Kolomenskoye, traditions of Dyak ceramics, and the symbolic silhouette of the Russian dome, Osetskaya Salov has created an infrastructure project embodying both local identity and progressive design.
