Types of Children's Beds

The entire range of children's beds can generally be divided into two large groups designed for different ages:

  • cribs for the youngest;
  • beds for older children.

Among beds for babies, several main types can be distinguished:

  • cradle;
  • classic children's bed;
  • transformer bed;
  • playpen.

A cradle is a bed designed for newborns.

A regular crib may still be too big for a baby, and in a small cradle the child will feel more comfortable.

There are cradles of various shapes and appearances: some resemble the upper part of a stroller, others look like traditional rocking cradles. It is not necessary to buy such a wooden cradle: caring parents can try making one with their own hands and decorate it with artistic painting.

A classic children's bed, surely, does not need a special introduction. It can be 'straight-standing', manually or self-rocking (so-called 'pendulum').

The construction of such beds can be solid or the side rail may partially disassemble. When choosing a bed, attention should be paid to the distance between the slats of the side rail — it should not be too wide so that the child does not get stuck between the slats.

Drawers for clothes and toys may be built-in or additionally placed under the bed. The top of the bed can be covered with a canopy, though when the child grows up and learns to stand in the bed, it is better to remove it.

A transformer bed is an excellent option for forward-thinking parents and their active toddlers. In the assembled state, it can represent a regular children's bed, next to which there is a side table or dresser that can be used as a changing table. Additional sliding drawers for storage may be placed underneath. During the transformation process, the side rail is removed, flipped and can be used as a writing desk. The side table is also removed, leaving a large sleeping area sufficient for the child and later on, teenager.

A playpen bed is good not so much for constant use, but for frequent trips. It is designed for children up to 4 years old, has light weight, folds easily, and is brightly decorated, which will surely delight the child. It looks like a small house with windows where the child will enjoy resting and playing.

Beds for older children can be divided into several main types:

  • regular;
  • pull-out;
  • fold-down;
  • two-tier bed;
  • loft bed.

The term 'regular' implies a single-bed that does not have any additional transformation mechanisms or special features in its construction. However, the design of such a bed can be anything but ordinary. Everyone knows what a simple children's bed looks like. But what if you add a forged headboard, canopy, sliding drawers for storage, or implement any other functional or decorative idea? Some children's beds have a special barrier to prevent the child from accidentally falling out during sleep. Such barriers are not only practical but also serve as decoration for the children's bed or sofa.

Pull-out beds are an excellent solution for a children's room designed for several children. They can extend from any other type of bed or consist of multiple levels, each of which slides under the others. But a pull-out bed is not necessarily an additional sleeping space that slides out from under the main one. A children's bed can be skillfully hidden in a platform, above which a writing desk, play area and more can be placed.

Fold-down beds combine all kinds of furniture equipped with lifting transformation mechanisms. These can be wardrobes-beds, dresser-beds, table-beds and sofa-beds. The latter refers to a structure consisting of a sofa and a cabinet behind it where the bed frame and mattress are hidden. Such transformers are often used in living rooms-spaces, but are also acceptable for a teenager's bedroom.

A two-tier bed can be stationary or convertible. The latter means that the upper tier can be detached, removed and used as a separate bed. Two-tier beds can perfectly blend with other types of furniture: for example, thanks to an additional pull-out section, a two-tier bed can provide sleeping places for three children. Or, for example, there are two-tier wardrobe-beds that in a folded state look like they don't even exist as a bulky structure.

A loft bed is one of the most space-efficient options for sleeping arrangements. These models of beds are produced for small children (e.g., domestic "Little One" or "Mini") and teenagers (e.g., from IKEA's range), and may differ in height and construction. Raising the sleeping area to a higher level allows filling the freed-up space with a workspace or wardrobe. The compact placement of the bed and wardrobes, and sometimes even a writing desk, makes the loft bed one of the most practical and original interior solutions.
