Installation of Recessed Lights

The simplest and most reliable way to install recessed lights is in gypsum board. Indeed, installing recessed lights in a ceiling made of gypsum board is the fastest and least expensive option.

Even installing recessed lights in a suspended ceiling involves more steps — just recall the preliminary installation of fittings and subsequent cutting of holes for the lights. Moreover, suspended ceilings have limitations on lamp power and distance between the ceiling panel and the light source or fixture.

Despite this, the installation process is similar in all cases and can be done quite safely with your own hands. It doesn't matter whether the installation is in a hallway, bathroom, or outdoors; the selection of lights, their price, and proper lighting design using them matter more.

Installation of Recessed Lights: Price and Brands

The cost of installing lights, regardless of the height at which they are installed above the ground (the latter matters more when installing outdoors):

  • in Moscow, it can cost from 200 rubles,
  • in Kiev — from 25 hryvnia.

Generally, brands and manufacturers (DELUX, ELECTRUM, CORONA, NOVOTECH, ECO, CROWN, TOR, etc.) do not affect the cost of work; rather, additional types of work, also called auxiliary works, influence this.

For example, installing wall-mounted lights may cost more than the typical mounting of grid lights on the ceiling. This could be because the wall finishing in a specific room requires more attention, and wiring the lights may be more expensive than typical ceiling wiring.

Mounting Recessed Lights: Video and More

After selecting and purchasing the lights, you should decide on their placement and connection method. In practice, there are only two options for the latter:

  • Installation of lights (fluorescent, halogen, etc.) is done on two wires, which are stripped at intervals necessary for connecting the next light.
  • Each light has its own pair of wires.

Types of Mounting

Outdoor lights usually use the second option, as it is important to maintain the integrity of the wiring. The second option is also necessary when each light requires independent control; group switching can save on wiring.

Installing lights is generally a fairly standard procedure and rarely causes difficulties, even during installation.

However, installing hidden backlighting can be challenging, but these challenges may not stem from the lights themselves but rather from how the ceiling is constructed.

Marking and Fitting Installation

For basic marking of each light's position on the ceiling, you can use a tape measure, square, and pencil. Holes in the ceiling are made depending on its material, and the installation height is also related to ceiling height.

The most careful way to make holes for lights is by using corona bits. Their diameters are selected based on the size of the mounting plate, and their depth again depends on the ceiling type: for drop ceilings, it's usually enough to make a hole just to reach the fitting; in all other cases, it depends on the type of mounting selected and the ceiling material.

Installing Lamps

After the lights are installed, you can proceed to install the lamps in them. Considering the size of the lights (with fluorescent lamps, etc.), manufacturers have started to use spring-type lamp fixtures, which significantly simplify the process of installing and replacing lamps in such lights.

Even when the installation of lights looks simple and easy, it's worth thinking before attempting to realize your dream on your own: what seems simple may hide nuances requiring certain skills, professional tools, or just patience.
