Why Are Ceiling Lights for Suspended Ceilings Needed?

Potential ceiling lights for suspended ceilings are not purchased for the beauty of the frame, lamp shape, or fixture decoration. Crystal chandeliers and forged elements are not our case. Embedded lights for suspended ceilings are compact and unobtrusive elements, the main function of which is simple: just to provide light.

Even with a modest design, spotlights for suspended ceilings can create a certain atmosphere in the interior without drawing unnecessary attention. In the case of such lighting, it is appropriate to speak about the concept of "functional lighting".

Let's talk about how to choose ceiling lights for suspended ceilings.

Style. Not all ceiling lights are made in a hi-tech style. There are actually many models designed in other styles. For example, next to minimalist modern lights, you can find classical imitations.

What Is an Embedded Light?

An embedded light is a fixture whose body is completely or partially hidden under the suspended ceiling, wall, floor, or furniture.

Types of Embedded Lights

Depending on the shape of the light, they are divided into:

  • panel (modular);
  • spotlights (standard, furniture).

Depending on the type of lighting created by the light, they are divided into:

  • diffused light lights;
  • directed light lights.

Depending on the depth of embedding, they are divided into:

  • fully embedded;
  • partially embedded (subtypes: external, protruding, surface-mounted).

Installing Lights in a Suspended Ceiling: What Bulbs to Choose for Suspended Ceilings?

Panel/modular lights are ceiling panels of standard size (600x600 mm). Usually, a panel light is part of a complex suspended ceiling.

Placement of the light: a modular light can be installed at any point on such a ceiling. Embedded ceiling lights are often used for office lighting due to their industrial, conservative look.

In a living space, you may not encounter glowing panels often: this solution is more suitable for public buildings than the atmosphere of a home.

INTERESTING SOLUTION: A light that is invisible. Such a light may not stand out on the general background of a suspended ceiling: it can only be noticed when the lighting is turned on.

Panel embedded lights provide only direct or reflected diffused lighting (direction — from ceiling to floor). To make the lighting uniform in rooms, more than one such light is usually installed.

Externally, panel lights resemble a box with a lid made of transparent plastic (light is diffused through it). You can choose a diffuser of any color and pattern.

Spotlights (focusing lights) (in everyday use, simply downlights).

Downlights are embedded lights, but it is not necessary to embed them into the ceiling.

INTERESTING SOLUTION: It is also not necessary to buy a diffuser for an embedded light. A light without a diffuser will provide more light, increasing the brightness of the light beam.

Ceiling lighting arranged with spotlights is usually a system for direct, focused local lighting of a specific surface area (most often small).

The bulb is inserted into the light with its own mirror reflector, and a circular diffuser (rarely square) is placed on top. In many models, the light head rotates — up to 359°, allowing you to direct the beam to any desired point.

ADVICE: Spot lighting is better used not for decorative purposes but to illuminate a specific point. This might be a closet, a shelf in the pantry, or an unobtrusive ceiling light in the hallway.

From a professional designer's perspective, mass use of spot lighting reflects more ignorance of potential buyers about other types of lighting than practicality.

Bulbs for Suspended Ceilings. For all embedded lights, there is a concept of "depth of embedding". It will depend on the type of bulb chosen by the customer and its operating temperature.

Modern light sources include several types of bulbs: metal halide, halogen lamps, and LEDs.

Traditional bulbs (incandescent, fluorescent) are no longer installed in suspended ceilings: these bulbs are large (too much embedding depth) and prone to overheating (a small ventilation gap must be made between the false surface and the base ceiling, separating them).

The housing of most lights allows for installing one or more bulbs in a group: so you can combine such light sources as halogen and LED bulbs.

Range of embedding depth for lights:

  • 1-2 cm — LED lighting;
  • 4-9 cm — halogen lighting;
  • up to 20-30 cm — for models designed for incandescent bulbs.

Suspended Ceiling Lighting: What Is It Made Of?

The most common material used for manufacturing the frame of embedded lights is aluminum cast under pressure. After casting, the aluminum is anodized, chromated, and powder-coated (an unlimited color gamut and variety of finishes).

Diffusers can be made of plastic (transparent/matte), glass (only in expensive models).

Natural wood and crystal can be used as decorative materials for lights.

Placement of Lights on a Suspended Ceiling

Proper placement of bulbs in any room's interior can form accents and visually adjust the geometry of the room.

ADVICE: Embedded lights can not just illuminate something. They can also "trace the path" of movement.

For example, the perspective of a long and narrow corridor can be emphasized by placing rows of lights on the ceiling.

If desired, you can maintain the integrity of the ceiling coating and embed lights into the installed ceiling cornice. The light cast from the cornice can be directed to the ceiling, forming an interesting overall lighting that visually enlarges the room.

Chandeliers for Suspended Ceilings

Almost any chandelier is suitable for modern suspended ceilings. However, when choosing a chandelier, consider not only its appearance but also the installation features of that particular model, types of bulbs used in the chandelier's set, and the type of lighting.

Chandeliers with shades

In a traditional design, the chandelier is mounted on a ceiling hook/fixture brackets. The mounting point is marked in advance. After securing the special ring, a hole is cut in the suspended ceiling.

Suspended chandeliers should be chosen based on the type of surface you have: glossy or matte. On a matte suspended ceiling, models that emit a light beam to the floor or walls look better.

IMPORTANT! The number of bulbs does not always affect the brightness of the room's lighting. The total power of the bulbs is not the only parameter that influences this. Much also depends on the direction of light. For example, three bulbs with downward light beams will provide an order of magnitude more light than six bulbs directed toward the ceiling. This rule applies only to matte ceilings.

Regarding glossy ceilings, it is the exact opposite: almost a mirror surface of such a suspended ceiling reflects light, scattering it throughout the room. So if you're wondering how to make a room brighter by yourself, other options are not needed: this is an effective and inexpensive method.

Some ceiling chandeliers may be without shades. In such cases, the light from each bulb multiplies, reflecting off the glossy ceiling surface.

IMPORTANT! Pay attention: light should be directed exclusively upward. Otherwise, dark circles may appear on the glossy ceiling surface over time.

Another detail to consider when choosing a ceiling chandelier is that the light fixture installed on a suspended ceiling must never be flat (a so-called "pancake"). The reason: the base of such a chandelier is often made of thin, highly heated metal parts. Overheating elements of such a chandelier can cause damage to the suspended ceiling surface.

Which Bulbs Are Better to Choose for a Suspended Ceiling?

These should be low-power, energy-saving bulbs.

IMPORTANT! Halogen lights for suspended ceilings cannot be used due to excessive heating of the light fixture components!

A perfect chandelier for a suspended ceiling can be considered one where more than ¾ of the bulbs are covered by shades.

When installing a surface-mounted chandelier with horizontal horns, ensure that the bulbs do not extend beyond the shade.

The best choice for a suspended ceiling is energy-saving lights based on fluorescent bulbs.

Chandeliers without shades

Chandeliers without shades can be equipped with various decorative elements: different bulbs, prisms, and reflectors. Such chandeliers are best used with glossy ceilings due to the untranslatable play of light.

If you decide to buy a chandelier with exposed bulbs, it is better to choose one where the bulbs are directed downward or installed at an angle.

A chandelier without a shade mounted on a suspended ceiling should be equipped only with energy-saving bulbs placed at least 10-15 cm from the ceiling surface.

IMPORTANT! If you really want to use halogen bulbs, you must maintain a distance between the bulb and the ceiling and reinforce the surface of the suspended ceiling with special protective layers.

LED Ceiling Lighting: Types

For rooms with high ceilings and large ceiling cornices, the best option is LED strip lighting. This type of light provides high brightness and uniform diffusion. LED strips are ergonomic and can be used as primary lighting in a home.

LED strips can also glow in several shades of white, which you can switch depending on the desired lighting level.

Thanks to special LED modules, ceiling lighting can be done from inside: LED lights installed behind the suspended ceiling. In the end, you get space savings, uniform lighting, and an interesting ceiling with internal illumination.
Such lights have 2 color spectrums: warm and cool light.

LED Chandeliers and Lights: Pros and Cons

Lighting from inside can transform any room and create comfortable, soft, and uniform lighting that is still quite bright.

LED lights are characterized by a long service life (at least 10 years without loss of brightness).

These are high-quality products that undergo testing not only for assembly quality but also for constant color temperature.

This type of light is used to illuminate suspended ceiling skylights.

A wide variety of such lights will allow you to choose a light based on style, brightness, and modular lighting options.
