Why a Designer Painted the Door to Match the Wall Color — and You Should Do the Same
There are several practical advantages behind this approach
Interior designer Vitaly Myasnikov worked on a 27 sq. m studio in the Green Park residential complex and made an unexpected decision: he painted the entrance door the same color as the walls. At first glance, this may seem strange, but there are several practical advantages behind this approach that dramatically change how space is perceived.
Main points from the article:
- The door in wall color visually dissolves and does not break up the space;
- This technique eliminates visual noise and creates a sense of unity;
- Metal door frames can be hidden with decorative covers;
- This solution works in any interior, not only in small apartments;
- Dark doors can also be painted to match the wall color.
Why Paint the Door to Match the Wall Color
"We painted it to match the wall color," explains Vitaly about his decision. This approach is based on the principle of visual dissolution: when a door blends with the wall in color, it stops drawing attention as a separate element.
In small spaces, this is particularly important. Every contrasting element fragments the space into parts, while monochromatic surfaces create a feeling of continuity and unity.

The Problem with Metal Frames
The main issue with entrance doors is the unattractive metal frames. "You know, usually door frames have such terrible frames that ruin the entire visual composition," notes the designer.
The solution is simple: "In our case, we decided to install decorative covers, called door surrounds, which completely cover the door and are painted in the same color as the door. "

Details Matter
To complete the look, all elements must be carefully considered: "All handles and door knob covers are painted black, just like the rest of the interior." Contrasting hardware creates a stylish accent while not disrupting the overall concept.

Psychology of Perception
When a door is painted to match the wall, the brain perceives the wall as one continuous surface. The door becomes part of the architecture rather than a separate piece of furniture. This creates a sense of more space and order.
This approach is especially effective in hallways and corridors, where every square centimeter counts.

How to Implement This at Home
- Select Paint Matching the Wall Color — exact color match is critical for the effect;
- Hide Metal Parts — use decorative door surrounds or threshold covers;
- Paint Hardware — handles and locks in a contrasting color or to match the door;
- Prepare the Surface — metal doors require special primer.
This simple trick works in any interior and costs next to nothing, yet the effect is like that of an expensive designer renovation.
