How a 3.2 sqm Old Bathroom in a Khrushchyovka Was Transformed Into a Warm and Cozy Bathroom
A couple from Volgograd did a great renovation without a designer
Do you think a small bathroom in a Khrushchyovka can only be made cozy with expansion? Not quite! Today we present to you Irina's (@xrushchevka) project. It inspires with its wooden motifs and shows how to organize space in a tight bathroom.
No clutter: How to save space
Even a small bathroom can be convenient. Get rid of heavy cabinets and shelves, choose a mini sink cabinet, and move the washing machine outside the room. Irina didn't give up the standard bathtub, but she chose a 50 cm sink cabinet with compact drawers for bath essentials.
Photo before renovationTheme of the renovation — an atmosphere of a neat sauna with wooden finishes. Of course, the owners chose reliable ceramic granite with a wood pattern that resists moisture. Colors and textures in the room are well-balanced: the accent wall is clad with "boards," the bathtub edging and floor are also done in wood, while other surfaces are finished with white materials. Light-colored tiles visually expand the space, and the wood-patterned part adds warmth, coziness, and style to the design.
A water meter is built into one of the tiles above the toilet, and the bathtub edge is held by magnets so it can be disassembled when needed. There's a compact shelf near the toilet for cleaning and hygiene supplies, and a small platform near the bathtub can be used to leave things or sit while bathing children or pets. Simple and convenient.

One of the valuable solutions for the homeowner is placing the water heater in the bathroom. This saves space on the kitchen and doesn't restrict the bathroom. The protected casing is moisture-resistant and lies in the same plane as the showerhead, so direct water streams don't hit it. Thanks to moving this "noise maker" into the bathroom, the sound is almost inaudible in other rooms, and you can confidently sing in the shower.
It is important to note that a viewing window, typical for all Khrushchyovkas, was sealed in the bathroom. The owners installed the unit with help from a gas service specialist, changed the utilities, and regularly perform maintenance for safety reasons.

Irina highlights the convenience of a warm floor. This way, you don't need to mount additional heaters on the walls and can feel comfortable during cold weather.
Pay attention to small details that help maintain the overall interior style: the mirror frame and accessories are made of wood and blend organically with the accent wall and floor. A bold rounded element in the center of the wall softens sharp edges and harmonizes the room.
