Unusual Bathroom in a Vintage St. Petersburg Apartment Made by Hand
Space was decorated without the help of designers
Our heroine Liza is a well-known blogger who completely renovated a St. Petersburg two-room apartment in old architecture. The apartment was decorated for rental, and one of the main highlights of this project was the bathroom. Here near Petropavlovskaya Fortress, cherubs fly around, and furniture was made by herself. Be inspired by these creative solutions!
They chose brightness and theatricality
As we mentioned earlier, Liza's living space was renovated for rent, so the goal was to fill every room with a distinctly St. Petersburg atmosphere. The bathroom turned out to be theatrical, as the owner puts it, even bordering on excess.
At the same time, one cannot say that the space looks disharmonious: on the contrary, these unique features make Liza's apartment stand out among others, and every visit to the bathroom becomes a memory in itself.

Tiled with Azulejo
For some time our heroine lived in Portugal, and that is where she fell in love with azulejo tiles. She was always interested in replicating them, but didn’t even realize how simple it is. Originally she wanted to paint the tiles in the style of Menshikov Palace, but the patterns there repeat — it would have looked like a bought design.
Let’s recall that the feature of azulejo is that the pattern on the tile creates a large tapestry rather than each tile being a complete element. Liza was inspired by engravings from the Petrine era: this gave rise to the Petropavlovskaya Fortress (the apartment is located nearby), and around it, cherubs and bunnies add atmosphere.

Did Not Use Built-in Furniture
Built-in furniture always involves separate expenses, and our heroine tried to save on the renovation. A solution was found: a furniture panel was placed in the bathroom, and under it a washing machine was installed. The wooden cabinet was bought on Avito — it fit perfectly into the interior.
Liza cut the countertop for the sink herself from a large furniture panel made of joined ash with a thickness of 4 cm.

Concealed the Drain Pipe in a Box
There were drain pipes in the bathroom. Of course, such elements could be left as they are, but Liza didn’t want to ruin the beautiful design of the space and enclosed the pipe in a wooden box.
To make sure the box didn’t stand out, it was painted in a tone matching all the wooden elements in the bathroom.

Decorated Curtains by the Bath
The bathtub was not hidden behind screens. Liza used a simple fabric curtain and Velcro — the “spiky” part was fixed from the inside with epoxy glue, and the soft part was sewn onto the curtain.
Since the entire apartment is decorated in a classic style, the fabric curtain on the bath fits perfectly into the overall concept. Also, it’s easy to wash and remove.
