Together with an architect, we present three interior design options — with different stylistic and color accents. We also share useful design hacks.

After a long and tiring workday at home, you crave space, simplicity, and comfort. Gradually, lavish elements of Art Deco and Baroque design are going out of fashion, making way for lighter and more functional interiors.

With interior designer Ekaterina Gurova-Shvarts and furniture store Hoff, we offer three modern living room design options — your choice.

Ekaterina Gurova-Shvarts, Architect, is convinced that with decoration, you can tell a captivating story about the people living in the house through design. The essence of modern style: Space and simplicity, abandoning clutter and meaningless luxury items. Convenience and functionality, where all furniture and appliances are in their proper place with clear purpose. Freedom of expression, light neutral walls and floors combined with vibrant decor.

A modern apartment is universality and comfort, a desire for open spaces, a rejection of excessive decoration and ornate luxury items. The home becomes a place where nothing is unnecessary, and every detail perfectly suits its owner.

The main task is to create an interior with a feeling of uncluttered space, light and non-intrusive. Hence the choice of items: all of them are practical, functional, and minimalist in form.

Minimalist Option

Plenty of light and neutral colors are the foundation of modern style. These include shades of gray, beige, white, and light brown. To avoid monotony, add graphics: geometric and plant prints in the 60s style and wonderful 'frame' lamps.

Vibrant Option

Those who prefer a more vibrant interior should complement their colorful furniture with colorful accessories and decor. Often, these are functional items: shelves, bookcases, and furniture of interesting forms. Colors are rich, and shapes are simple, with no patterns or floral or plant motifs. Use live plants: their green color stands out beautifully, adding a necessary color accent.

Modern style is freedom of expression. Here, ideas can be borrowed from other styles. Modern style is very similar to Scandinavian design. Natural wood, live indoor plants, natural colors, baskets, and clay vases make the interior eco-friendly and close to nature.

Design Hacks for Creating a Modern Style Interior
Minimal furniture, with panoramic windows as decor, letting in plenty of natural light.
For flooring, use light-toned laminate or parquet boards laid evenly without patterns. Carpet with short pile is also acceptable. Another option is monochrome matte poured floors in soft tones.
Ceilings can have any number of levels, made from gypsum board, plastered, or combined with suspended ceilings. The chandelier has an unusual shape fitting the style — made of glass or with a metallic finish. Shades are geometric, without ornaments or curls.
Furniture features proper proportions, straight or smooth, slightly rounded lines. Upholstery is monochromatic with a smooth finish. This can be fabric, natural or synthetic leather. In choosing textile for furniture, you can add several bright accents to break the monotony of the design.
Modern style easily transforms into similar styles in spirit. Into Scandinavian, Art Deco, or Techno. For windows, choose monochromatic textiles. Geometric patterns may appear, alternating matte and glossy threads, but without plant motifs.
