Every owner of a country estate or dacha wants their plot to look attractive. The most common solution is a lawn. But to keep it neat and beautiful, it’s not enough to just sow grass or buy a roll lawn.

But lawn care still requires effort. With many automated tools, lawn maintenance has become easier. However, some tasks still demand time and physical effort — notably mowing.

If you’re new to lawn care, start by understanding the different types of lawns. Some need mowing almost weekly, while others only require mowing twice a year.

How to mow a lawn correctly? When should it be done? What ensures even, dense growth? These are just some of the questions that may arise during lawn care.

Is Mowing Really Necessary?

Without regular mowing, lawns gradually thin out, weeds appear, and grass loses its appeal. Regular mowing stimulates new growth, creating a dense turf that prevents weeds from spreading.

Regular trimming prevents flowering and keeps grass fresh and green. Therefore, mowing is essential — though you must consider the specific needs of each lawn type.

Beyond health, mowing also allows creative design — combining patterned cuts with vertical greenery for unique landscaping.

Choosing the Right Time to Mow

First mowing should occur when grass reaches 10–12 cm in height. Mowing too early may damage shoots. Do not cut more than 2–4 cm at once.

Continue mowing from April to October. Mowing height depends on lawn type. For the final mowing of the season, leave grass slightly longer to protect the root system from freezing.

Weather matters: avoid mowing on hot, sunny days — sun exposure can dry out grass tips. Also, do not mow right after rain. Wet grass clogs mowers and causes clumping, leading to uneven results.

Consistency is key. If you miss a mowing, avoid cutting too much. Overcutting stresses the lawn and risks permanent damage.

Lawn Type and Mowing Tips

For formal lawns, mow every 10 days. During peak growth, increase to weekly. Keep height at 7–9 cm.

Decorative lawns need more frequent and shorter cuts — the most demanding type, requiring special attention.

Sport and parking area lawns can be mowed 1–2 times per month, at 6–10 cm height.

Flowering lawns should be mowed once in spring after reaching proper height, and again in autumn before frost. The same applies to Moroccan-style lawns.

Mowing Technique

To achieve a smooth, even lawn, follow proper technique. Begin by mowing two parallel edge strips — this is where you turn the mower. Then work across the lawn in overlapping passes. Always roll the mower wheels over already-cut grass to avoid missed patches.

Finally, trim around trees, fences, and other obstacles using edgers or trimmers.

Following these tips ensures a neat, attractive lawn all summer. Regular mowing also reduces extra work like weeding.
